Beenie Man drops riddim project, "Beenie Man and Friends"

Deejay Beenie Man, buoyed by the success of his number one hit singles, Rum & Red Bull and I’m O.K., has tackled a new ambitious musical project which he hopes will help to re-define his legacy as a leader and innovator in the world of dancehall.

Beenie Man has enlisted the help of his superstar friends on the musical project he has dubbed “Beenie Man & Friends” and the result has been eight great combination singles, each featuring Beenie Man, on a bouncy dancehall beat.

“No other artiste in the business has ever tried anything like this before. I am writing, arranging and co-producing every song on the riddim, and I am also performing on every song on the riddim,” a proud Beenie Man said. “The only thing I haven’t done is build the riddim, that was done by Danny Browne.”

The project features the talents of artistes such as Khago, D’Angel, Ding Dong, Fambo, Deva Bratt, Kantana, Versatile, Cee Gee and Laden.

“I plan to shoot a video for the single called Time of My Life with D’Angel, and a medley video with all the others, I already have the concept in my head, it is going to be sick,” he said, laughing.

This audacious project is the germ of an idea that Beenie Man had years ago, but he got the raging fever last month and within a week, and a couple of urgent Blackberry pings and messages, he had pulled the critical elements together.

Beenie Man promises to thrill fans

beenie_man_africa.jpg"Beenie, can I be your girl?" ecstatically screamed a fan of Anthony Moses Davies, popularly known as Beenie Man, after the Jamaican dancehall star had just touched down at Harare International Airport on Friday afternoon.

Although not as big as the Akon welcome in August, the small crowd that came to receive the star injected so much life into the arrival, mobbing him until he had to call out:

"Africa, give me some space!"

The Rastafarian community in Zimbabwe also came in their droves to welcome their brethren.

The Grammy award-winning Jamaican will perform at the Lion Lager Beer Festival that will take place at Old Hararians Sports Club on Saturday.

Beenie Man arrives en masse at Alicia Keys' 'Element of Freedom' bash

By GateCrasher

Beenie Man caused quite a stir outside Alicia Keys' release party for "The Element of Freedom" at Greenhouse on Wednesday night.

"He showed up with huge group and demanded they all get in immediately," a spy dished of the dance hall artist. "The venue wanted to let them all in, but 20 people are a little hard to accommodate at once."

Although it was her own party, Keys acted precisely the opposite. "Alicia snuck in with only a few friends," a partygoer said, adding that the singer's boyfriend, Swizz Beatz, was nowhere in sight.

Beenie Man's Manager Denied That Beenie Apologise For His Homophobic Lyrics

beenie_man.jpgDancehall artiste Beenie Man who's been facing a tough battle with Gay Rights over the past few weeks was quoted in an interview with international Entertainment News website which stated that he apologised for his homophobic lyrics. The article was written by Dan Satherley.

However according to Beenie Man's Manager Blue the story was fabricated, as he has no clue of Beenie Man doing any interview with Dan Satherley of

Below are a few quotes that took from the Dan Satherley article with the headline:
Dropped Big Day Out musician Beenie Man apologises

"When I wrote the lyrics boys were raped and murdered often - even recently a nine-year-old went to buy cigarettes for a man, came back and was raped and murdered. The act of sodomy was my concern when I wrote the song.

"In the past I offended others with offensive lyrics, I apologised then and now, I never took back my word. Our world is an interesting place filled with variety and we all have to respect others no matter what race, choices, culture or lifestyle. I am not a supporter of hatred and never was."

He concludes the email with a message for New Zealand and Australia: "Australia and New Zealand, please know that I am sincere and right now I am proposing peace, one world.... One Love regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation and nationality."

Dropped Big Day Out musician Beenie Man apologises

By Dan Satherley Writer

beenieman-pic.jpgReggae musician Beenie Man apologised today for homophobic lyrics he says have been "misunderstood".

The controversial Jamaican superstar was booked to play at next year's Big Day Out music festival before outrage from gay rights groups forced organisers to drop him from the line up.

In an email sent out today, Beenie Man, aka Moses Davis, said the offending lyrics - where he called for the murder of homosexuals - were written "at a point in my life when I younger and was seeing a lot of exploitation of poor and defenceless young boys in the garrison - where I too was born - by rich men. When I wrote the lyrics boys were raped and murdered often - even recently a nine-year-old went to buy cigarettes for a man, came back and was raped and murdered. The act of sodomy was my concern when I wrote the song.

"I realise that those men were not gays, but were predators or paedophiles, which is not a common word in my dialect - hence the perception when generalising. I am older and realised the difference after," he wrote.

Promoter Changes Course - Beenie Man pulled from Big Day Out

beenie-man-big-day-out.jpgBig Day Out organisers have backtracked and pulled controversial Jamaican performer Beenie Man out of next year's event.

Gay rights groups expressed outrage at the invitation to the January event in Auckland for Beenie Man, whose lyrics included "I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays".

The Big Day Out website today said Beenie Man had renounced those sentiments, had signed the Reggae Compassionate Act in 2007 and had promised stick to "peaceful and humanistic values" at Big Day Out.

However, it said "the depth of feeling and hurt amongst these groups has convinced us that for us to proceed with his Big Day Out appearances was, and would continue to be, divisive amongst our audience members and would mar the enjoyment of the event for many".

A Facebook group had been started this week to protest Beenie Man's participation and boasted more than 900 members as of Thursday.

Gays Picking On Dancehall Music - Beenie Man Will Perform On Big Day Out

By J-Tymz Writer

beenie-man-big-day-out-sizzle.jpg gets to understand that the Big Day Out music festival promoter Campbell Smith will not remove Jamaican artiste Beenie Man from the much anticipated Big Day Out line-up to be held in Auckland on January 15 2010.

According to reports from Radionz, protesters say they will disrupt the performance of Beenie Man, who has in the past performed homophobic songs which include lyrics inciting violence towards gay men and women.

The gays are holding a grudge against Beenie Man for a song he wrote back in 1999, which they claimed, incites violence against their kind.

Why They Only Pick On Dancehall Music?

Reggae DJ Stinky Jim said he's not a supporter of dancehall music with homophobia lyrics, but said it is a reflection of the Jamaican society.

"Why don't they pick on Hip-Hop artistes? It's not just Dancehall this goes on in. It happens in other forms of music, dancehall is the scapegoat, I think it's because it's a poor music that doesn't have major cooperation and backing and it's an easy target. I can't believe that by harassing artistes and making a witch hunt it's going to improve the situation. Stinky Jim told Radio New Zealand.

Mr Campbell Smith says that they will meet with the Beenie Man from there they will advised him not to perform offensive material at Mt Smart Stadium on the day of the show. However, there are no plans to cancel the Jamaican Star from the show.

Beenie Man may be banned from Big Day Out

By David Farrie

beenie_man_2.jpgThe Big Day Out music festival is facing pressure to get rid of one performer called Beenie Man.

The reggae musician has been banned from playing in other countries for his strong anti-gay views, and critics say he should get the same treatment here.

He is recognised as a skilled musician but it is his lyrics that are causing a stir.

"It goes beyond disagreeing with the way we go out and kill a gay."

A Facebook group protesting against Beenie Man's Big Day Out appearance is rapidly gaining traction, with over 1000 members since starting on Tuesday.

"The Big Day Out is one of my favourites," says protestor Kat Jenkins

"For me it's my favourite day of the year and so to have someone there saying they want to hang and murder some of my best friends is just wrong!

Organisers released a statement saying the Big Day Out's core values include those of tolerance and understanding.

Beenie Man For BIG DAY OUT 2010

beenieman-toronto-show-artiste.jpgIt's time to turn up the sound system and welcome the king of the dancehall, BEENIE MAN, to BIG DAY OUT. From Kingston, Jamaica comes the chart-topping, Grammy-winning master of reggae evolution, who during more than 20 years in the game has pumped out dancehall smashes including The Girls Dem Sugar, Who Am I, Slam and Gimme Gimme. On stage, he's a nattily-dressed "livewire lightning rod of a man, pumping adrenaline and feeding off the beat" (OC Weekly). And if all that weren't enough, the fastest man on earth, Usain Bolt, counts BEENIE MAN among his favourites. Stand back - BEENIE MAN will be setting off dancehall dynamite at BIG DAY OUT 2010 on January 15th at Mount Smart Stadium, Auckland.

America's new favourite big beat soul popsters PASSION PIT are bringing their musical gifts to BIG DAY OUT 2010. Led by singer/songwriter Michael Angelakos' funk-fuelled falsetto, PASSION PIT's debut album Manners comes alive with kaleidoscopic soundscapes and plentiful ambition. On stage, they're chaotic, oddball and impossible not to dance to. They're the only pit we recommend you dive right into.

The hardest-working men in dance music, James Ford and Jas Shaw never stop moving. And you won't either, when SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO DJs work the Boiler Room into a frenzy at BIG DAY OUT. From the Brits who brought us We Are Your Friends, Hustler, It's the Beat and 10,000 Horses Can't Be Wrong, we can guarantee one thing: surprises. "Their samples are eclectic, their sound is electric, and their energy is, well, orgasmic." (, March 2009). A year ago, we lapped up their live show. In 2010, we'll delve deep into their record crates - prepare to play musical lucky dip with SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO DJs at BIG DAY OUT 2010.

Who Am I--The Untold Story of Dancehall's King Hits North America

who_am_i_beenieman_book.jpgFrom his days wandering in and out of sound system sessions as a semi-homeless five-year old to his reign as the undisputed "King of the Dancehall," the untold story of Moses Davis is the untold story of the bold cultural movement--Dancehall--that was spawned out of the economic depression and political tribalism of Jamaica's inner-city. With WHO AM I-The Untold Story of Beenie Man, veteran entertainment journalist Milton Wray delves into the unimaginable world of Dancehall's biggest, brightest, and most controversial figure, while also giving a very intimate look into the growing mainstream phenomenon known as Dancehall.

Originally released by Great House Books in the Caribbean in 2008, WHO AM I has finally made its way to North America. Currently available through U.S. Reggae powerhouse VP Records in New York, and worldwide through, WHO AM I digs into the real story behind the rumors: the 16-year rivalry with Dancehall's 'Warlord'; the rise and fall of the Shocking Vibes family; and the very public deterioration of his relationships with two of Dancehall's leading ladies.

Beenie Man Takes Belize By Storm

The 'King of the Dancehall' became 'King of Belize' this past weekend when he inaugurated the Belize Reggae Fest Series in Belize City. Scores of Belizeans stormed the Belize City Center to see his Royal Highness Beenie Man, alongside Reggae crooner Anthony Cruz, Dancehall's 'First Lady' D'Angel, dancer Dyema, and DJ Andrew D of Irie Jam Radio.

The 'Doctor' Beenie Man sent Belizean Reggae fans into frenzy when he made a surprise appearance at the Santiago Castillo Plaza hours before the big event. Mobbed by throngs of eager fans Beenie eventually had to be whisked away for his own well being. 'Attitude Gyal' Dyema also made a big splash at that Plaza, as Belizean Dancehall fans were equally excited to finally see the 'Dutty Fridaze' dancer live.

"I have every Dutty Fridaze and Passa Passa video," states 17 year-old Belizean native Karen. "My mom won't let me go to the show tonight so I had to come down here and see Dyema and Beenie Man. I can't believe it," she says, moved to tears as Beenie Man shakes her hand."

Belizeans are Ready for Beenie Man!

New York

beeniebelize_reggae_fest_photos.jpgBelizeans anxiously await the arrival of the "King of the Dancehall" Beenie Man this Saturday to launch the Belize Reggae Fest Series. Produced by American-based promoters Triple T Productions and Nuffmuzik Productions, the Reggae Fest is the very first entertainment series dedicated to bringing top tier Caribbean performers to Belize on a regular basis.

"The response has been amazing," states Triple T Productions CEO Tasz Smith. "I have been in Belize for a little over a week now, and everyone is buzzing about the show. Ticket sales are going extremely well. Belizeans have always been great supporters of Caribbean entertainment, unfortunately the access to top level entertainers is limited. I am really glad that we [Triple T and Nuffmuzik] decided to launch the Belize Reggae Fest Series and bring the best of the Caribbean to Belize."

Beenie Man, who will be in Belize for the first time in nearly four years, is equally excited about launching the series.

Beenie Man or Mavado - Who took Reggae Sumfest?

The Secret Agent Writer

Reggae Sumfest Dancehall Night was filled with extremely great performances especially from Mavado and Beenie Man. Both artistes had the audience screaming and shouting for more. Reggae Sumfest team decided to take this story from another angle, which might be the best way to know who took Dancehall Night. So we asked a few persons from the audience to give us their opinions.

Shauna - Age 23
I love Beenie Man even if him perform good or not but I have to really give credit to Mavado him managed to have the audience rocking throughout his performance normally a only Beenie Man alone do them things deh. But I am not going to say Mavado’s performance was better than Beenie Man’s performance likewise for Beenie’s. I think they both gave a stunning performance.

Latifa Campbell - Age 19
The event was great and I would love to say big up to all the artistes who performed. Mavado performance was great but I think what makes Beenie Man’s performance a better set is the fact that him have the girls them pon him side. There is no way Beenie Man could have flopped because him have a catalog of hot songs and at the end of the day he’s not just an artiste but also an entertainer.

New book on the life of Beenie Man

beenie-man.jpgThe sensational new book on the life of dancehall king Beenie Man has finally been scheduled for worldwide release this summer. The forthcoming biography, Who Am I? The Untold Story of Beenie Man, will treat fans of dancehall music to more than four hundred pages of intrigue, eye-opening revelations and never-before-seen colour photographs depicting the young superstar’s life.

Who Am I? The Untold Story of Beenie Man is the world’s first-ever dancehall biography, and is being published by Jamaican publishers Great House OmniMedia in time for Reggae Sumfest. Written by noted Jamaican journalist Milton Wray, the story tracks the twists and turns of Beenie Man’s dramatic life, following in great detail the reggae superstar’s rise from childhood to the Grammy Award, numerous other honours and musical firsts, including an unequalled string of chart-topping hits.

The author worked on the project for more than eleven years, documenting Beenie Man’s tabloid-rich life and career as they unfolded. After first contacting the artiste in 1994, Wray eventually took a sabbatical from Jamaican journalism to live and do research in New York City for more than a year. While in the United States, he conducted interviews and collected vast amounts of information on Beenie Man and his international impact on the music business. While writing the book in Jamaica, Wray did in-depth research by interviewing a host of persons including relatives, friends, associates, music business personnel, rivals and, of course, the girlfriends of the reggae/dancehall icon.
