Tifa & Stacious speak out: Dancehall divas insist they got raw deal at Sumfest

By M. Jodee Freelance Writer

On a night when Dancehall's leading diva earned her rightful crown, a pair of prominent female artistes claims that they were treated like peasants by organizers of the recently concluded Reggae Sumfest stage show.

Internationally acclaimed deejays, Tifa and Stacious gave rousing sets during their appearances on Reggae Sumfest's Dancehall Night last week Thursday. Despite the positive receptions they garnered from fans, both artistes insist that negative vibrations could be felt backstage as the highly regarded Dancehall divas have come forward with allegations of gender discrimination and prejudice following the treatment they received at Reggae Sumfest.

Tifa and Stacious recently gave interviews to TVJ's Entertainment Report; voicing their grievances regarding Sumfest while implying that promoters of the stage show exercised bias throughout the night. Despite her high profile status and strong catalogue of hits including Matie Wine, Dash Out, Tifa was one of the first artistes on stage during Sumfest and according to the deejay, she's done enough in her career to warrant better treatment.

"10 o'clock I go on the stage and I feel like I’ve earned my place in Reggae/Dancehall, I've earned my time and my spotlight and my shine. I just feel like it was very disrespectful how dem deal wid it, like yuh haffi go pon stage now."

Sean Paul, Damian Marley Touch the Sky and Mek it Bun Dem

Sean Paul and Damian Marley have been extremely explosive, especially since 2012. Both superstars have been able to apply their uniquely hardcore sounds to international tones. Sean Paul’s techno song Touch the Sky and Damian Marley’s dubstep Mek it Bun Dem have added a distinct twist to their reputable musical collections.

Touch the Sky is housed on Sean Paul’s fifth studio album -Tomahawk Technique, and merges Sean Paul’s signature dancehall sound with a punchy techno beat - the beat being produced by DJ Ammo. The track is not typically Sean Paul’s style as the performer explored techno for the first time. When asked why he ventured to these new grounds, Sean Paul expressed that he was quite comfortable with the exploration. He continued saying “Techno kinda reminds me of Reggae One Drop.”

In Mek It Bun Dem, Damian Marley lays his flavour down on a unique Reggae-Dubstep rhythm from the internationally acclaimed producer, Skrillex. The song’s flow-filled style is very appealing as it invokes a slow, spicy rock from its listeners. The track introduces Dubstep to the Jamaican massive and proves to be a good ‘jam’ to take a listen to.

"After the second staging of the event in Kingston, we have been getting calls for the event to be staged in the western and northern areas of the island," said Marvin Lawrence C.E.O of Lawless Events. "At this point we weren't sure if we were ready to migrate the event from Kingston, so we held back. Marco Polo is now ready to take on Jamaica, starting with Negril's Hip Strip" Lawrence added.

Nando Lights the Torch for Team Jamaica

Nando_griffiths_Team_Jamaica.jpgBefore the Olympic torch was lit in London on July 27 to signify the start of the 2012 Olympic Games, the Jamaican torch had already been blazing for a couple of weeks. In case you are wondering, "A coulda which torch him a chat bout?," I am referring to a figurative torch - the song Team Jamaica (“Light the Torch”) by singer Nando Griffiths (“Nando”). Over the past two weeks, Light the Torch has emerged as the clear favorite of the Jamaican media houses and the Jamaican public as the theme song for the Jamaican Olympic team to London 2012. The song can be heard in rotation on all major Jamaican radio stations and on popular diaspora programs such as Irie Jam in New York. The accompanying internet video, which has elicited overwhelmingly positive response on YouTube and FaceBook, has also been picked up by leading Jamaican television stations for broadcast.

Light the Torch is an inspirational anthem built on three pillars: morale support for our athletes, realistic expectations of our athletes, and celebration of their efforts and achievements, whether or not such efforts result in a medal. Nando explains that he recorded Light the Torch, which he co-wrote with other members of his One Jam team, to rally the fans to join Team One Jam in support of Jamaica’s athletes to London 2012, specifically, and all current and future members of Team Jamaica. The song has thrust Nando, who currently has two songs - the lovers rock ballad My Everything and the bouncy dancehall track Ride All Night -- in the Jamaican Top 25 Countdown, firmly into the media spotlight.

Tad's Record - Jamaica 50th: Then & Now Album

Jamaica_50th_then_and_now_cover_tads_records.jpgOn the evening of August 6, 1962 Britain's Princess Margaret ordered the lowering of the Union Jack and Jamaica's black, green and gold flag was hoisted for the first time. The symbolic gesture officially made Jamaica an independent nation. Among the thousands who witnessed the historic event at Kingston's new National Stadium was young Tad Dawkins.
"My father was a policeman and he was on duty at the stadium that day, so I got to go and see everything," Dawkins recalled.

Fifty years later, Dawkins is head of Tad's Record, one of the leading reggae distributors. He is celebrating his country's Golden Jubilee with the commemorative 'Jamaica 50th: Then and Now', an album looking at the evolution of Jamaican music over the last five decades.
According to Dawkins, the mix of Mento, Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae and Dancehall, is a fitting tribute to Jamaica's diverse music culture.

"We covered a lot of ground to get the songs right. It should be something people can buy 50 years from now," he said.

Tiana Asks "Weh Di Party Deh" - Now Available on iTunes

Tiana_Weh_Di_Party_Deh_iTunes_21stHapilos.jpgThe eternal summer question is asked by dancehall artist Tiana "Weh Di Party Deh"? There is an euphoria that comes with the summer season, and most people take this time to relax, enjoy life and hit the party scenes! Although the song resonates well with the summer, it very well applies to year long parties, and has all the musical components to become a classic played throughout the year.

Danielle Shand, better known as Tiana has had a busy year and from all accounts a busier more months to come. It seems as if the artist who burst onto the scene in 2009 with her single "I Won't" produced by her manager, Carlington Wilmot (OutARoad), has found the formula to connect with her fans on a deeper level. Such an example is the single "I Won't" addressed issues of domestic violence & was recorded following the notorious incident involving R&B/pop superstars, Chris Brown & Rihanna. Tiana has since been non-stop in studio releasing hits after hits and to the delight of her fans some videos (check out her latest video "Dem A Bawl" below).

Tiana who has been dubbed "The Princess of the Dancehall" names her musical inspirations to include Rihanna, Beenie Man, Lady Saw and Lady Gaga. She attributes her success in the male dominated arena to working twice as hard, staying focus, believe in what you are doing and most importantly having a good team and management, a nod to her manager Carlington Wilmot who has been a friend, mentor, family and guide.

Jamaica 50 NY Festival Hosted By Oliver Samuels Offers Music, Food, Performances & more

Bronx, U.S.A - With more mature Jamaicans in the New York area having limited access to venues that are more inclusive than musical performances to recognize Jamaica's 50th, the organizers of the Oliver Samuels Jamaica 50 NY Festival have come up with what will be seen as a solution. The idea of this celebration explains Oliver is to put together a show that will blend old and new. To not allow the older generation to feel left out of the celebrations because they are in the USA and to help the younger generation re-connect with our rich history in all areas and not just music. I think with this show we achieved that.

Oliver teams up with actress Andrea DELCITA Wright to bring together an all-star cast for The Oliver Samuels Jamaica 50 NY Festival. This is the first time this talented duo will be sharing the same stage.

The event will be held at Roberto Clemente State Park, located at 301 West Tremont Avenue, Bronx NY 10453, on August 4, 2012. Gates open at 11AM until 7PM. Everyone is encouraged to wear their Jamaican colors and of course to be in possession of your flags.

The venue reflects, musical and culture performers, VIP guest speakers, sport figures, and will recognize the contributions of Jamaicans in several areas over the last 50 years.

Love so nice, they'll have to do it twice in New York, NY

junior_kelly_love_so_nice_concert_new_york.jpgJunior Kelly's passion for his craft was as palpable as the excitement inside the Rose Garden and as he entered centre stage last Sunday, crooning the lyrics of Blaze, fans held nothing back as they welcomed him back to Brooklyn, New York.

With a smile that reached the depth of his eyes, Junior Kelly showed his appreciation for the love he was being shown and gave as good as he got. It was a case where the fans could do no wrong and, despite performing on tracks, Kelly managed to pull up a song ...or two.. or three .. or more... on demand.

The theme for the night seemed to be 'patron satisfaction and pure niceness' and Junior Kelly delivered masterfully. Songs like Believe In Yourself, Dem Wrong, Missing You and Been There, the latest single that Junior Kelly is now promoting, connected with the audience, but Sunshine proved to be one of the biggest winners of the night. It had to be pulled up three times and each time it elicited a whole new wave of screams. As expected mega hits Receive and Love So Nice were eagerly embraced and and had a freshness that captivated.

Keeping a pace with Cham

Baby_Cham_Jamaican_Dancehall_Artiste.jpgIn a world where deejays come and go at a rapid pace, Cham believes his staying power in the industry is primarily due to the high quality of his music.

The deejay is currently experiencing a resurgence in his popularity locally, thanks to two tracks, Wine and Tun Up which feature his wife Ophelia (aka O).

But, the deejay tells the Jamaica Observer that although he has not had a hit locally in some time, he has always been able to stay on the road performing and keeping in contact with his fan base.

"The truth is people love Cham," he states confidently. "I think it comes down to the quality and timelessness of my music and how I present myself on stage. Then there are ladies," he adds, bursting into laughter.

Cham contributes this timeless and consistent musical content to the work of master producer Dave Kelly, with whom he has maintained a close working relation from his earliest days on the Jamaican dancehall scene.

"Dave Kelly and I have a chemistry... it's just the right connection," he explains. "He's like a chess player. If we sit in the studio and come up with 10 songs, he will be able to make that right move and pick the hit track - it was his idea to put O on Wine, and we all can see what has happened with that." Cham says.

Veteran IRIE FM disc jock, Mighty Mike found dead

mighty_mike_irie_fm_disc_jock.jpgThe entertainment world has suffered another painful blow after news emerged on Thursday night that prominent disc jock, Michael "Mighty Mike" Jones passed away. The 52-year-old broadcaster was found dead at his St. Ann home last night after he was noticeably absent from his scheduled 6-10 p.m. shift at IRIE FM.

According to reports, a member of staff and fellow disc jock at IRIE FM, DJ Amber was dispatched to Mighty Mike's house after several phone calls to locate Jones went unanswered.
After several knocks on Mighty Mike's door also went unanswered, a locksmith was reportedly called in to break into the veteran disc jock's home, where he was then found dead. Police then arrived on the scene to investigate, later intimating that they suspected no foul play had been involved in the musician's death.
Reportedly, Mighty Mike had been ill for some time and was diabetic.

DJ Amber issued a Blackberry Broadcast message reading, "I wish my brethren Mighty Mike will enjoy an even greater life in the spirit world. He will be missed and remembered well by many. Gone but not forgotten. See you next lifetime my friend."

Nando Griffiths' "Team Jamaica - Light the Torch" 2012 London Olympics Song

As debate rages on about which song should have been designated the official song to commemorate the Jamaica 50th celebrations, one song that was recently released is staking a strong claim to be the official song for Team Jamaica heading to the 2012 London Olympics. The song is Team Jamaica (Light the Torch) by fast-rising singer Nando Griffiths, son of legendary Jamaican jockey Winston "Fanna" Griffiths, and it is synched to a very moving internet video that captures some very memorable moments, mainly from the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2009 Berlin World Athletics Championships.

While Team Jamaica (Light the Torch) urges our athletes to "Go for your dreams” and to “Stand up and take your place when our flag is raised and our anthem plays,” it also assures them that “No matter where you place, we will still celebrate you Team Jamaica.“ This last point is particularly timely and relevant, as only earlier this week the officials of the local track and field technical coaching staff publicly urged Jamaica’s track and field fans not to pressure the athletes. In a similar vein, JFF president Captain Horace Burrell lambasted those who have already started to unfairly criticize Usain Bolt after his two recent losses to Yohan Blake and asked that Jamaicans, “Instead of tearing down Usain, let us build him up.”

Damian Marley, I-Octane shine at St Kitts Jazz Fest

junior_gong_damian_marley_i-octane.jpgThe St Kitts Jazz and Blues Festival has come and gone but lingering in the minds of those who went are some of the scintillating performances that unfolded.

Friday, June 29 performers are no doubt some of the artistes enjoying rave reviews from patrons.
Scheduled to begin at 9:00 pm it was an hour late. Things kicked off with Ruff Kutt taking the stage to back Jamaica musical comedian Lovindeer. He was in his element having patrons cracking up with his facial expressions and witty lyrics.
Mr Festival Eric Donaldson brought back sweet memories as he injected the festival spirit into the venue singing songs such as Cherry Oh baby, but it was the on festival songs that had the fans singing away with him like Lonely Nights and Living On Free Food Ticket.

Following a band change it was time for British saxophonist Courtney Pine who showed why he is rated among the best.
Next up was Digicel's brand ambassador I-Octane who just seems to get better with every performance.
It was heightened excitement when he took the stage at Warner Park backed by Ruff Kutt. He blasted on stage with No Love Inna Dem - that was certainly not an issue with his fans in St Kitts though as they gave that aplenty to him.

Sean Kingston 'Back 2 Life' Album: '100,000 People' Features Wiz Khalifa, Shakira Unites for Song

by Charley Rogulewski

Sean_Kingston_Back_To_Life_Album.jpgIn May 2011, Sean Kingston came face-to-face with death when a jet ski he was maneuvering crashed into a bridge in Miami. In the months leading up to the accident, the singer -- best known for his reggae-pop hit "Beautiful Girls" -- had been working on his third album, releasing several singles like the Nicki Minaj feature "Letting Go (Dutty Love)," "Dumb Love" and the Justin Bieber collaboration "Eenie Meenie."

After two months of rehab to mend both injuries sustained during the incident and the two surgeries for a torn aorta doctors found, Kingston's near-death experience made him reexamine his life. He decided to start from scratch and go back to his reggae roots for his third effort.

Kingston returned to the lab, this time with producer J.R. Rotem, who helped the 22-year-old crooner create the sound on his eponymous 2007 self-titled album. With a new batch of collaborators, Kingston says fans can expect "a whole new me" on the forthcoming LP, fittingly titled Back 2 Life. The BoomBox caught up with Kingston and had him dish some details about the project -- he and Shakira unite on a song. He also told us about iChatting with Wiz Khalifa and their collaboration, his favorite Bob Marley track and the ladies man he tried to be back in elementary school.
