I-Octane Becomes the Voice of the People Through his New Single 'My Story'

Reggae and Dancehall hit maker I-Octane strikes gold again with the release of his new song "My Story". The message of this song is familiar territory for the artiste as he always seeks to speak up for the masses whose voices aren't often heard.

The song produced by DJ Frass, appears to give praise "to all who wipe car class" and "to those who sell bag juice, to help dem youth", but I-Octane is quick to point out that the message of the song spans a wider cross section of people.

"Yeah I specifically mentioned two particular groups of people," the artiste admits, "But due to time constraints with songs, it wasn't feasible to list out every single group, but I'm really singing for all people who are struggling to make ends meet, struggling for a better life."

I-Octane went on to explain that he's always felt it was his responsibility to speak up for the downtrodden.

"The Almighty blessed me with a gift where I can put words and thoughts to music. When I see people suffering or going through certain things, I can take those emotions and express it for them. In essence, I am giving the people a voice, saying what they want to say but never knew how to express it. The biggest advantage I have as an artiste, is that I have a platform. I'm lucky enough that when I speak, people listen. So what I'm doing is singing on behalf of certain people." And sing for the people he does.

KG Eager To Make Her Guyana Debut

Kereen-Gregory-gospel-female-artiste-jamaica.jpgGospel singer, Kereen Gregory, aka KG, is just about ready to exhale.
She confesses that she has been holding her breath, waiting for that call which would signal the official launch of her career internationally, and that moment has finally come.

The rising gospel artiste has been invited to perform in Guyana over the Easter, a period considered by Christians as the holiest of seasons. As Kereen explained, it's not that she has never performed overseas before, it's just that this time she is being recognised on her own merit. KG notes that she is therefore embracing the opportunity to step forward in her designated space and spread the message in song.

"To God be the glory," a bubbly KG said of the upcoming event. "Prior to now, I have gone abroad as a back-up singer, complementing a main gospel act. Don't get me wrong, I am truly grateful for the experiences and I have learnt so much while those journeys. However, there is a different feeling when a promoters asks for you, specifically. I feel like I am growing as an artiste and that the efforts of my team to put me out there are bearing fruit," KG said, with a huge smile.

Reggae Artiste Sizzla Hits Back At Gay Rights Critics

By M. Jodee Freelance Writer

sizzla_kolonji_hospital.jpgProminent Dancehall/Reggae singjay, Sizzla Kalonji has responded sternly to gay rights activists who’ve long criticized the lyrical content of his songs.

Last week, promoters in Sweden cancelled a stage show that Sizzla was booked to appear on this Wednesday at the Hornstull Strand in Stockholm. The show was axed after several gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual activists protested Sizzla's appearance on the bill; condemning his lyrical damnation of homosexuality.

After the latest complaints issued against him by gay rights groups, Sizzla, through his management team at Kalonji Musik and Pride Music, issued a detailed statement firing back at such critics who have long opposed his music and stances on such issues as well as clarifying public misperceptions made about him in recent times.

The statement in part reads, "We work closely with many of the artists in the reggae scene and feel that your constant attack against the artists and the musical genre is unfair and one sided. Sizzla has not even begun to tour, yet press releases have been sent giving misinformation to the public about him performing homophobic lyrics at 18 other shows recently. The tour has not even started and Sizzla was not booked to perform in neither Canada nor England. False information is being written to malice and defame his character. It is good to remember that Sizzla has not been arrested, convicted, or charged with any crime and does not have a criminal record what so ever. He abides and will continue to abide by the laws of any State in the World that he chooses to visit or is invited to visit. It is his nature and his character to respect all."

Top 10: Best international collaborations involving Jamaican artistes

By Marc Parc Writer

Sean_paul_beyonce_baby_boy_dancehall_r%26b.jpgThough musical genres such as hip-hop, rock and roll as well as R&B may cop more accolades and mention on the international scene, it’s an undeniable fact that Dancehall/Reggae has left an indelible mark on pop culture worldwide.

Ever since Bob Marley was in his hay day, Jamaican music has impacted and inspired fans, observers and artistes of various backgrounds, with many of today's most prominent acts such as Rihanna, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars and several others employing Dancehall/Reggae sounds in their music. Furthermore, many internationally acclaimed artistes and bands have done successful collaborations with Jamaican artistes, most recently with breakthrough Dancehall artiste, Popcaan and Jamaican born hip-hop star, Busta Rhymes on the Only Man She Want remix.

That joint effort has garnered Popcaan positive international recognition after dominating the local industry in 2011. With that in mind, here's a look a ten memorable collaborations involving Jamaican artistes that helped shape the careers of many prominent Dancehall/Reggae acts.

10: Shabba Ranks feat. KRS-One - The Jam:
In the late 80s, Dancehall was a slowly developing genre which was gaining steam locally and in the Caribbean thanks to artistes like Yellowman and Shabba Ranks. However, it was Shabba who would introduce Dancehall to an international fan base as he teamed up with foundation hip-hop artiste, KRS-One for the mixed genre single, The Jam. Featuring a mixture of Dancehall and hip-hop sounds, The Jam introduced the world to Shabba Ranks as a hardcore, sharp-thinking lyricist who could mesh with artistes of different sounds. The collaboration later garnered Shabba his first international recording contract as he signed with Epic Records in 1991. From there, Shabba Ranks never looked back as he scored a pair of Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album over the next two years and even became a fixture on American Television with famous comedian, Marlon Wayans doing a memorable skit of him on In Living Color.

Busta Rhymes Is Back

busta_rhymes_rapper_hip_hop.jpgThe veteran MC Busta Rhymes and newly signed Cash Money rapper has unveiled an over-the-top new video for "Why Stop Now," featuring Chris Brown and directed by Hype Williams.
- RJ Cubarrubia,

The collaboration follows Rhymes' guest verse resurrection on Brown's 2011 hit, "Look at Me Now." Speaking to in December, Brian "Birdman" Williams revealed that Busta has been hard at work on his Cash Money debut "E.L.E. 2: End of the World"

Pressure is a natural phenomenon in life that can spring forth beautiful, planetary wonders. Then again, it can bring chaos and mayhem if not properly managed. Yet it is a necessary force that separates the weak from the strong, the real from the fake and the mediocre from the extraordinary.

For as long as one can remember, the career of iconic rapper/actor Busta Rhymes has been filled with pressure. The pressure started with the dissolution of his once-promising rap group (Leaders of The New School) which forced him to go solo. It continued with his meteoric rise to stardom and the expectations of maintaining platinum status while continuing his creative upswing. Pressure even hit Busta with personal tragedies and unforeseen run-ins with law enforcement. However, throughout his career Busta has faced obstacles that would destroy the average MC's career. Clearly, Busta Rhymes is not your average, everyday, run-of-the-mill MC. Busta Rhymes knows how to manage pressure. As a matter of fact he thrives on it. It is one of the things that has propelled his explosive career into international superstar status. With his Universal/Motown debut Back On My B S, Busta Rhymes proves once again that

Drawing on some of the love songs and ballads from his album. I-Octane performed while surrounded by an array of candles, which created a cozy and intimate atmosphere. He was accompanied by two talented and world renown guitarists, Bobby Seyvarth and Mario Sebatian, which gave listeners the opportunity to really hear the amazing quality of his voice as well as to connect with the artist and his music on a deeper, more intimate level.

The performance and interview, which recently premiered on MTV IGGY adds to the body of evidence that shows the rising status of the reggae sensation. He continues to develop by leaps and bounds and his widespread acceptance by peers and fans worldwide is continuously captapulting him to the next level.

ZJ Liquid bemoans 'pay for play' system, expects return to airwaves

By Marc Parc Writer

liquid-zj-zip.jpgProminent Dancehall/Reggae disc jock, ZJ Liquid has long been aware of the much speculated politicking that occurs within Jamaican music. However, he refuses to partake in any of it.

The issue of payola or what locally termed 'money pull up' has been a major talking point within the Dancehall/Reggae industry in recent years. Groups such as the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JARIA) have questioned the highly unusual play rate of certain songs on radio as well as the regular endorsement of particular artistes by selectors during their sets; citing them as evidence of 'pay for play' schemes.

During a recent interview on the Lauren O Lauren show on Flow TV, ZJ Liquid addressed the payola concept; insisting that while such politics does exist within Dancehall/Reggae, he won't abandon his principles in order to make money within the industry.

"Dat natural enuh, people a go offer you cah everybody wah get dem ting out dere. But is fi you fi jus' kno seh yow, yuh hafffi stay true to music and at di same time, di whole money ting, a program ting dat same way so yuh still nah be true to the music," he said.

Stacious Do You Like It - 6 weeks on German Black Charts, peak at #23.

Stacious_do_you_like_it.jpgFollowing her hit feature with dancehall star Mavado ("Come into my room") this number is an additional party song by the young Jamaican dancehall lady which was only cobbled together to hammer away at the bass controllers in the world's clubs to remind them what their job in the evening is really all about!

The number has been devised as a single version of the anniversary album of the "Kingstone" label / sound system that is thus celebrating its 15th anniversary (15 years Kingstone) and accordingly there is also a German RMX version with Youthman as Rubixxx Remix. This mix which is more of an 80s number and has very honest lyrics is a beautiful alternative to the very electronic hard mix of beat architect Ben Bazzazian, who really targets the woofer centres and successfully pulls off a crossover number of various different styles.Distortion effects, abrupt stops and diced vocals make this song so special.

The crowning conclusion is then marked by a Diamond Bra RMX which, with a view to the pending Riddim Selection, features the following acts: T.O.K, Buccaneer, Ziggi Recado, Ce ́Cile. This RMX is based on Central America and is clearly characterised by Reggaeton vibe.

I-Octane, Sizzla Ruled New York Link Up Spring Break

i-octane_sizzla_spring_break_negril.jpgLast Saturday night at the Long Bay Beach in Negril saw some stellar performances from some of dancehall’s finest. The event - New York Link Up Spring Break - saw each performer, one after the other showing that they were there to ensure dancehall fans had a great time and that they did.
However, standouts for the night proved to be the consistent Digicel brand ambassador I-Octane, Sizzla and Singer J.

Coming on stage at 3:15 am I-Octane kicked of his performance with Nah Wash before introducing his signature hit Lose A Friend.

"I'm not singing this song for myself tonight, it’s dedicated to Bounty and Miss Ivy,” with Bounty in the house the song was a way for fans to share in the Killer’s grief.

The follow-up song seemed a given Mama You Alone. Burning Bridge, Jah Jah, Puff It and I A Cry should have put the cap on his half-hour performance, but his fans would have none of that!
I-Octane was called back on stage four times before they reluctantly accepted that the show had to go on.

Sizzla was in a fiery mood and he showed it but ‘bunning’ out a lot of ‘unrighteousness’ during his performance. With songs such as Get To The Point, Praise Jah and Just One of Those Days he kept the massive on a high.

Popcaan says there's a lack of effort within Dancehall industry

By Marc Parc Writer

Popcaan_only_man_she_want.jpgInternationally acclaimed Dancehall superstar, Popcaan believes there's something missing from the Jamaican music industry. But to him, the fact that Dancehall's biggest superstar languishes behind bars is just part of the problem.

Popcaan gave a recent interview on TVJ's Entertainment Report which aired on Friday; talking about the state of Dancehall music without currently incarcerated superstar deejay and long-time mentor, Vybz Kartel. According to the Only Man She Want deejay, Dancehall lacks energy without its centerpiece attraction.

"Wid no Worl' Boss around it a go have a different flavor to it because weh Worl' Boss name? Vybz Kartel so automatically him bring vibes to di ting," Popcaan said.
However, the self-professed 'Gaza Prefect' insists that a much deeper problem exists within the Dancehall community. According to Popcaan, too many artistes aren't putting enough effort and dedication into making music as well as ensuring that they're songs possess the quality and content required to strongly impact the industry.

"Certain artiste more relaxed now and dem nuh hungry fi di ting like one time so you know yuh a go have less hit songs. Di time weh dem wudda tek fi put into a song dem nuh really do it nowadays, most artistes don't," he said.

"Yuh cyaah just put out any song. Even if it no be a big hit it fi be a hit weh people can listen to same way. In order fi dat happen, the artiste dem jus' haffi put out more work and good music fi di people dem."

Jamaica's Top Sounds Bass Odyssey and Black Kat Fight for Title

World_Class_reset_Bass_Odyssey_Black_Kat.jpgDespite international visibility and fame, there is an age old debate that resonates among clash fans of which sound rules Jamaica's countryside -- Bass Odyssey or Black Kat. Hailing from the remote Jamaican territories of Saint Ann and Christiana, far from the city life of Dancehall hotbed Kingston, respectively Bass Odyssey and Black Kat have been battling over the title of Jamaica's top country sound for years.

Now, before thousands of clash revelers at both World Clash New York R.E.S.E.T. on Saturday, April 7 (w/Fire Links, Tony Matterhorn, Poison Dart, Earth Ruler and David Rodigan) and World Clash Jamaica R.E.S.E.T. (w/Kilamanjaro, Black Blunt, Heavy Hammer, Rootsman and Code Red) on Easter Monday, April 9, these powerhouse sounds will settle the score. While the stages in New York and Jamaica will serve as battlefields, the ultimate proving ground for Bass Odyssey and Black Kat will clearly be in their homeland in front of loyal supporters at Pier One.

It's no secret that Bass Odyssey and Black Kat are stellar war sounds Bass Odyssey and Black Kat are synonymous with high power sound clash. Rising to prominence in the early 90's, the sounds have cemented them selves as fixtures in the sound clash arena, generating scores of victories, a worldwide fan base and the utmost respect from fellow members of the fraternity. Known for craftily defeating legions of sounds over time, Bass Odyssey and Black Kat remain the most feared players in game. Most of today's modern day sound systems don't feel that they can properly reach the big leagues without facing off against these clash leaders.

Sanjay's Intense Musical Collabs - Wine Closer With Alaine

…Sanjay is setting up himself as one to watch for the rest of the year.

Prolific song writer Sanjay has recently dropped two intense musical collaborations which have bolstered his image as one of the ‘baddess’ songwriters in the dancehall game today.

The first track called Piece A Di Wine, released last month was produced by Conroy of Washroom Entertainment for Sanjay's Portland Cottage Productions and features dancehall king pin Beenie Man. It has been described as a legitimate club banger. Since its release the song has been a hit online and is receiving good airplay on several radio stations locally, in the Caribbean and the southern United States.

As if that was not enough Sanjay then released another hot collaboration; this time featuring reggae sensation Alaine. The track called Wine Closer was produced by Arif Cooper for his Fresh Air Productions on the Worldwide Riddim. Like Piece a Di Wine, Wine Closer has also secured a good position on local airwaves and is definitely a favourite among not only fans of Sanjay but dancehall fans in general.

These two hot collaborations show that Sanjay is a supreme lyricist and song writer and has the enviable ability to twist words and manipulate language to do what he wants.

New Song: Sean Paul Featuring Pitbull, 'She Doesn't Mind (Remix)'

by Jenna Hally Rubenstein

sean_paul_remix_pitbull.jpgSeems about time that party peeps Sean Paul and Pitbull would hop aboard the collaboration train. The two powerhouses joined forces on a sultry dance jam, "She Doesn't Mind (Remix)." As you might expect, the song has some seriously caliente Latin influence courtesy of Pitbull, as well as some Jamaican undertones courtesy of Sean Paul. In short, if you can't afford a vacay this year, just whip yourself up a fruity cocktail, throw on your bikini, and put this song on repeat. Boom, done.

Sean Paul opens the song and in his unmistakable vocals he tells a chick he wants to hook up with that it's totally okay she's not his girlfriend: "Girl, I got you so high/ And I know you like/ So come on push it on me/ If it feels alright/ Put it, drop it low and break it off/ No, she doesn't mind/ Aight, she doesn't mind, aight, she doesn't mind." 'Kay, we don't love the cheating scenario but at least the dude is upfront, right? Honesty is always the best policy.

Listen to Sean Paul's "She Doesn't Mind (Remix)," featuring Pitbull, after the jump.

Pitbull goes in hard on his verse and raps less about hooking up with chicks and more about how hard it was for him to get a record deal: "It's Mr. WW and Sean Paul/ Big dogs, for sure/ I'm from the city where they hustin,' hustlin,' hustlin,' Rick Ross/ Blood, sweat, tears/ Just to eat a meal/ So I crawl, walk, ran and I got a deal." While we're not sure what the two verses have to do with each other, we are sure that this is guaranteed banger that'll find a comfy niche up in da club. That, and it's the best song ever for your upcoming tropical-themed staycation!

He has commanded the respect of ‘A’-listers in the musical arena and is now a highly sought after Reggae, Hip-Hop, and R&B producer both on the East Coast of the United States and in Jamaica.

Teetimus’ impressive discography is as a direct result of dedication to duty and he has had the pleasure of serving up major artistes including Sean Paul and Wayne Wonder with his unorthodox style of productions. He has also worked with various international artistes and of course, on his own projects. Teetimus' story begins at a tender age as both his parents were singers. He was further influenced to take on music as his career path when he was introduced to the drums by a well known local percussionist who owned and operated Trackstar, a small recording studio a few houses down from where he lived.

As his skills at playing the drums improved, Teetimus' interest in music was stimulated and he yearned to know how to play other instruments, including the keyboard, bass and acoustic guitar. Teetimus' fascination with percussion continued throughout his youth and earned him a place in the Reggae community as one of the most talented percussionists around.

Vybz Kartel Says "they want me imprisoned long time"

By Marc Parc Writer

vybz_kartel_peom_prison_letter_carolyn_cooper.jpgEmbattled Dancehall superstar, Adidja Palmer, more popularly known as Vybz Kartel continues to find expressive ways of proclaiming his innocence as he languishes behind bars.

Last week, the Jamaica Gleaner published part one of Kartel's letter to University of the West Indies professor, Carolyn Cooper in which he detailed his thoughts and experiences since being taken into custody last September. In the letter, the Portmore Empire deejay, who faces murder, drug and obstruction of justice related charges, accused law enforcement officials of perpetrating a demonizing image of him to the mainstream while conceding that he may never get a fair trial in his cases given that the public has already convicted him for his alleged actions.

Three days later, Kartel, through his publishers, issued three excerpts from his debut book, Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto, furthering his claims of innocence while aiming to distinguish his controversial on stage persona from his off stage demeanor.

On Sunday, the Gleaner published part two of Kartel's letter as well as an attached poem relaying feelings on his current legal predicament. The conclusion of Kartel's letter followed a reply by Carolyn Cooper, who dispelled perceived notions of a friendship between herself and the self-professed 'Worl' Boss,' while expressing her belief that the artiste will receive a fair trial. She also stated that Kartel's lecture at UWI last March, entitled Pretty Like a Colouring Book: My Life and My Art has been published in the Jamaica Journal. Furthermore, Cooper talked of the prominent deejay's proposal to award the Adidja Palmer Prize to the top student in her Reggae Poetry course; a proposal that's since been shelved given the serious nature of Kartel's charges.

Kartel's conclusion stated in part, "In closing I would like to let the people know that I am an innocent man and I have faith in my lawyers and know that I will be acquitted."

Following his letter was the attached poem which read as follows:
The police have found me guilty and I haven't gone to trial yet,
But they spread propaganda on T.V. & internet
Dem a beat it in the people's mind that I'm guilty and deserve death,
But the public knows how the police operate, so mi nah fret.
So many people in court for allegedly taking 4, 5, 6 pickney life,
So how they don't discuss that on 'CVM at Sunrise'?
Allegations of extrajudicial killings by security forces have already been issue,
But I've never seen them on TV. so much, talking about that, did you?
Me never kill nobody yet but they say my music breeds crime,
That's why they're on my case they want me imprisoned long time.
I am an artiste so I know things will make the news,
But don't crusade this ungodly way to distort people's views.
Mi swear my innocence before all mankind and God,
Why would I risk going to jail, leaving behind 7 children, after mi nuh mad.
I am not the first man the romans soldiers have sacrificed,
Like me, that man was not guilty, That man was Jesus Christ.

Stacious creating waves on the German Top 40 Blacks Chart

Just when you thought the clip was empty! This energetic dancehall diva has reloaded and is ready for 2012 like it was World War III. This year has already been historic for the dancehall 'Donnette' who is currently riding the German Top 40 Blacks Charts at number 23 with the single Do You Like It, on the Kingstone Label out of Köln, Germany. This should not be deemed a small feat as the chart is dominated by hip-hop royalty namely Rihanna, Lil’ Wayne, Busta Rhymes and Nicki Minaj, just to name a few. When quizzed about this accomplishment the artiste was quick to note that she was very surprised and overwhelmed as Jamaican artistes don't usually feature on this chart.

While she climbs the charts, Stacious is embarking on her second foray in the restaurant/hospitality sector. Café Scrumptious will be officially opened on March 13 and is situated at 26 Eastwood Park Road. She is the first to admit that the location of the first restaurant played a huge role in the venture being unsuccessful. However, she is undaunted and has used that failed attempt to secure this new location which she hopes the fraternity and fans will support. The menu options will include cakes, smoothies and sub-sandwiches. In addition, the space features bar and lounge facilities.

As if these moves aren't keeping her busy enough, Stacious has been going hard in the studios

Former Intense host Pepita tries hand at music

By M. Jodee Freelance Writer

Pepita_host_artiste_female.jpgOne of Jamaica's most prominent media personalities has returned to the spotlight in a way that few expected.

Pepita Little aka Chica Pepita, former host of the popular Television Jamaica (TVJ) entertainment program, Intense, surprised fans and peers alike by unveiled her debut single on Wednesday. The curvaceous diva, who recently won the Youth View award for Media Personality of the Year, premiered her Reggae-themed single, via IRIE FM on Wednesday night, to rave reviews.

The sensual love song, produced by veteran hit maker, Colin 'Bulby' York, features soothing vocals from Pepita as she talks of those who've found their ideal partner to complete them.

In it she sings, "Since you came into my life, everything was alright right from the very start, the only one for my eyes, it's no surprise you've stolen my heart. I know you love me baby, you don't have to say so, for something deep inside of me says I've got to let you know."

This marks Pepita's second crowning achievement since she was relieved of her duties as Intense host last December after a physical altercation with a co-worker inside TVJ's studios. Since then, fans of the media personality have flooded the show's Facebook page, demanding that they put her back on Intense as they felt that the show lost its touch without her. Intense has since been hosted on an interim basis by artiste turned media personality, Sanjay until show producers find a suitable, long-term replacement amongst hundreds of candidates who auditioned for the post this past January.

Chino and Di Genius not managed by Yendi

Freddie McGregor to unveil novel

Big Ship captain, Freddie McGregor will become the latest Jamaican musician to join the literary ranks.

The Reggae patriarch has been working on his debut novel, I Will Wait For You, which will be released via Pageturner Publishing House. McGregor joins a plethora of Dancehall personalities such as Macka Diamond (Bun Him and The Real Gangster's Wife), Miss Kitty (Good Girl Gone Bad) and most recently, D'Angel (Love Triangle) who’ve released novels through Pageturner.

The official release date for I Will Wait For You has not yet been confirmed but should hit book shelves later this year.

Chino and Di Genius not managed by Yendi

Meanwhile, Freddie McGregor's sons have also hit the headlines but for different reasons. Contrary to recent speculation, prominent singjay, Chino McGregor and award-winning producer, Stephen 'Di Genius' McGregor are not being managed by former Miss Jamaica Universe, Yendi Phillips.

This after reports in Belize emerged earlier this week that Phillips had taken over management responsibilities for the duo. Chino and Di Genius were in Belize last weekend for a series of scheduled concerts and were accompanied by Phillips, according to Belize-based publications.

Big Ship Productions currently handle bookings and other music-related queries for both artistes while Blueprint Publicity & Promotions Ltd take care of public relations matters.
Gossip sites have kick-started rumors in recent weeks of a possible relationship brewing between Phillips and Chino. Those rumors have yet to be substantiated.

Rihanna feuding with Chris Brown's girlfriend? Let's examine the evidence

by April Daley

Is she a good Twitter girl gone bad? Rihanna has taken to the 140-character site to offer up a steamy image of herself on Wednesday - in which she strikes a strategically covered-up topless pose with the message, “Where have you been all my life?!”

The post has sent already-wagging tongues into overdrive, wondering if this is just another part of her alleged feud with Chris Brown’s current girlfriend, model Karreuche Tran. Last week, the songstress tweeted a feasibly harmless but potentially offensive picture of a packet of rice cakes dressed up in hoop earrings and shades with the caption, “Ima make you my b****.” Rihanna’s followers made the obvious link to Tran, who is half-Vietnamese.

Then, when one of Rihanna’s followed asked her to save him some rice cakes, she responded with, “Kinda DRY.” Was it all a thinly veiled dig? Maybe. Maybe not. On her “Birthday Cake (Remix)” single with Chris Brown, she does sing, “Come and get it / Sweeter than a rice cake / Cake worth sipping.” And anyone who has ever eaten a rice cake knows that yes, they can be dry.

rihanna_twitter_fight_Karreuche_Tran.jpgWhile we were busy decoding Rihanna’s twitpic game, Karreuche retaliated with Nicki Minajlyrics on her Facebook. “I win you loose!!! [sic] *nicki voice* I mean I got him, you got pictures of him” with a friend posting adding, “I’m Angelina, you Jennifer. C’mon, you see where Brad at.” Jab? Again, maybe. Maybe not.

Karreuche tweeted that she doesn’t even have a Facebook page, but that retreat didn’t seem to phase Rihanna, who fire back song lyrics from Minaj’s rival, Lil Kim: “I’m a leader, yall on some followin s-, comin in dis game on some modeling s-!”

Is this a full-on feud? It’s all still a mystery. Either way, it’s clear these two won’t be trading friendship bracelets and braiding each others’ hair anytime soon.
What do you think? Is this a war of words or is just some silly social-media back-and-forth?

Top 10: Jamaican musicians gone too soon

The recent passing of legendary pop songstress, Whitney Houston truly shocked all walks of music life as her angelic voice captivated millions of fans worldwide and inspired many of today's premiere artistes, including within the Dancehall/Reggae fraternity.

Having died at a relatively young age (48), Houston's death triggered memories of many other iconic artistes who passed while enjoying the fruits of their prime like Amy Winehouse or adjusted to the latter stages of their careers like the 'King of Pop,' Michael Jackson. It also offered of similar instances within the Jamaican music industry where fans were left to wonder "What If?" when an artiste's life was taken away while still perfecting their well-regarded craft.
As a measure of remembering the fallen who've made contributions, whether small or large, to the evolution of Jamaican music into a global phenomenon, he's a list of 10 artistes whose impact on music forever resonates with those they've left behind.

10. J.O.E - Born Alty Nunes:
J.O.E was regarded as one of the premiere upstarts in Dancehall/Reggae after his smash hit, Nah Nuh Mercy earned strong acclaim in 2009. The son of renowned dancer, Patsy Ricketts, J.O.E (Jah Ova Evil) seemed to have a promising career in front of him after having previously performed at Reggae Sumfest and St. Mary Mi Come From.
2011 was poised for J.O.E to stamp his authority on the local scene as the Equiknoxx Music recording artiste unveiled two well received singles, Tonight and Rasta Chant. However, J.O.E's life and career were suddenly cut short after the 25-year-old singjay suffered a rupture blood vessel in the head, shocking fans across the industry. His death came just hours after performing a live rendition of Rasta Chant, which was later released in his honor.

9. Copper Cat:
Just two week prior to J.O.E's death, a fellow young cultural artiste, Demar 'Copper Cat' Graham was shot killed outside the home of his adopted father, Richie Stephens. The former Jamaica College student had garnered buzz after the release of his first mainstream single, Mek It Stay in 2008. More success followed in 2010 after unveiling popular songs such as Friend Murderer and Life Goes On, encouraging fans with his upbeat, conscious lyrical tone.

After Copper Cat's senseless killing in January of last year, his final recording, Since You Came In on the Penthouse Records produced, OMG Riddim was released; reminding fans of what could have been for the young star, who was only 22 when he died.

Bounty Killer issued March court date, plans funeral for ‘Miss Ivy’

Bounty_Killer_photo_outaroad_double.jpgProminent Dancehall superstar, Bounty Killer faces an emotionally daunting next couple of weeks as he prepares for two major events in his life.
On Monday, the Alliance leader hosted a nine night in his home community of Seaview Gardens in Kingston to celebrate the life of his late mother, Ivy Williams aka Miss Ivy, who died late last month following an illness. The nine night was attended by several of Bounty Killer's peers, including Busy Signal, Elephant Man, Kiprich and, most notably his long-time rival, Beenie Man who all offered condolences and words of encouragement to the 'War Lord' during his time of mourning.

Now, media reports been confirmed that the funeral service for Miss Ivy will take place on Sunday March 18, though no venue and time has been offered as yet. On Wednesday, Bounty Killer again paid tribute to his late mother, acknowledging what would have been her 72nd birthday, via Twitter.

"Happy birthday to my beloved mama, Miss Ivy Williams, today is her 72nd birthday 7.3.40/26.2.12. U "ll all ways be here with us mama my hero and shero love u darling!!" he tweeted.

Amongst those allegations are that Bounty Killer supposedly pointed a gun at the officer.

The trial was postponed to March 20 after Bounty Killer appeared in court on Tuesday, only for the matter to be delayed once more.

World Clash Gets a Double Dose of Tony Matterhorn

tony_matterhorn_world_clash_new_york.jpgNew York, New York -- The clock to World Clash's heralded return in New York and Jamaica is ticking and the series has sparked immeasurable excitement in the sound clash arena. Many have coined the stagings of World Clash R.E.S.E.T. the most anticipated clashes of 2012. With World Clash thriving as a hot topic on facebook, twitter and in the streets, even more potent than the event itself is the hype surrounding larger-than-life selector Tony Matterhorn, who hasn't touched down on the New York World Clash stage in quite some time. Sound clash enthusiasts are always anxious to see Tony Matterhorn in action, but the heat has especially turned up a notch for this performance, as clash fans can hardly wait to witness Matterhorn's face off against nemesis Fire Links for the first time on the World Clash stage. Set for Saturday, April 7, 2012 @ Amazura in Queens, New York, this highly anticipated World Clash R.E.S.E.T. staging will also feature heavy hitting contenders Bass Odyssey, Black Kat, Poison Dart, Earth Ruler and David Rodigan.

Set to compete in World Clash R.E.S.E.T. in New York and host World Clash R.E.S.E.T. in Jamaica, the industry's most visible selector Tony Matterhorn has people talking for more reasons than one. Whether it's his over-the-top radio interviews where he is verbally warring with fellow contenders or his candid video segments, Tony "Mentally Ill" Matterhorn has everyone waiting to see what's next.

Tony Matterhorn's involvement in Irish and Chin's 15th Anniversary stagings of World Clash R.E.S.E.T. is a no brainer, particularly because of the popular selector's strong ties to the World Clash Jamaica (formerly Death Before Dishonor) brand. Matterhorn is pivotal in World Clash Jamaica's early development, bringing an onslaught of attention and hype to the event because of his early victories and back to back titles. Before Panther changed World Clash history with consecutive wins as "The Five Star General," Matterhorn made his mark as the first contender to have back to back titles. Namely, Matterhorn won World Clash Jamaica in 2002, 2003, followed by U.K. Cup Clash.

Vybz Kartel book release: Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto

As seen from the letter written to Dr. Cooper, Adidja Palmer's greatest concern about being held without bail thus far is not the affect on his career or the financial losses he is enduring; instead, he is truly concerned about the effect that the situation has on his family. Whereas Vybz Kartel's motto is "Gaza for Life," Adidja Palmer's motto is “family first.” In his first book, he wrote his Vybz_kartel_voice_of_the_jamaican_ghetto.jpgfeelings about his mother and parenting - thoughts he has wanted to share with ghetto youths for some time now; so he placed them in his book - Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto. When asked through a third party what message he wanted to send out, Kartel asked that we release the following excerpts from his book as his message to his fans, his mother and his family in that order. He never wanted to issue a new message as he wants people to see the man he was before incarceration in the words he wrote years ago. Despite many challenges and missed publishing dates for obvious reasons, the publishers of Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto think that the Jamaican people need to know the Adidja Palmer that is on trial and not convict him through their dislike for a controversial DJ named Vybz Kartel. These excerpts were written long before any of the alleged incidents Kartel is charged with occurred. These excerpts he wrote before May 2011 and included them in an official statement released by him that same month.

From Chapter 1 - THANK YOU JAH

Let your Jah be your guide - each day when you wake up anywhere in Jamaica or in the world say - Thank You Jah, me wake up this morning.

I keep saying that I “vision” better days coming. Now, here is part of the reason why I encourage my people to read Proverbs. There are so many lessons to be learnt from the book, especially in Proverbs 29 when Solomon jus roll out de teaching one after de odda. In Proverbs 29: 18, Solomon tells us that without vision the people perish. There are different types of visions. There is the out of body experience that the great Garnet Silk described in his song “Zion in a Vision.” Then there is the vision that King Solomon is talking about. We have a word for it in the ghettoes of Jamaica – it is called“preeing.” Preeing literally means looking at something and thoroughly analyzing it before proceeding to make a decision. This is what I am referring to when I say “I vision better days coming.” It is not an idle thought.

Beenie_man_bounty_killer_nine_night_outaroad.jpgAn array of Dancehall and Reggae superstars turned out to support industry giant, Bounty Killer at a tribute event dedicated to his late mother.

Bounty Killer held a nine night on Monday in honor of his mother, Ivy Williams aka Miss Ivy, who passed away last week Sunday at the age of 71 following an illness. The wake, which took place in Bounty’s home community of Seaview Gardens in Kingston featured appearances from several prominent Jamaican artistes such as Busy Signal, Elephant Man, Richie Stephens, Bridgez, Richie Stephens and Elephant Man, amongst several others.

Perhaps the biggest name, however, on the list of stars that appeared at the nine night was Bounty Killer's long-time rival, Beenie Man who offered condolences and words of encouragement for his on and off friend as they remembered Miss Ivy.

Bounty Killer offered his gratitude to Beenie Man and addressed the support he's received in this time of mourning, via Twitter, following the conclusion of the wake.

"Me and my family just wanna extend our gratitude and appreciation 4 the turn out and support last nite 4 Mama. It was overwhelming to numbers of persons that came thru from as far as St. Bess and Clarendon, music industry players, media houses, and the general public, all my close friends fans and mostly to Moses Davis. The last man some ppl 'd be looking to see came and paid his respek. Bless up the Doc as Bounty and Beenie is like PNP and JLP, we don't need one without the other. I love Jamaican ppl yow. We The Best!!" he tweeted.
It remains unknown if or when funeral arrangements will be made for Miss Ivy. She was survived by her eight children, with Bounty Killer being the youngest son, as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ce'cile Reps The Females With 'Cheater's Revenge

cecile_cheaters_revenge_chris_martin.jpgSassy songbird Cecile has never shied away from tackling controversial topics that are considered taboo in the Jamaican society. And her latest foray into the dynamic of sexual power in relationships center's around the single, 'Cheater's Prayer the Female Refix (Cheater's Revenge)' a counteraction to Chris Martin's worldwide reggae hit of the same name where she declares outright that she is considering cheating on her boyfriend, whom she suspects is having an affair with another girl.

Produced by ZJ Chrome, the single has been in heavy rotation on local FM radio but is also generating considerable buzz in countries such as Bahamas, Belize, St Lucia, Kenya and is often played right after Chris Martin's 'Cheater's Prayer'.
"Chris had asked me to do it initially but I didn't want to do it, and then when I saw the reaction to the song in the clubs, I had to do it," Cecile said in a release.
"Another song on the same riddim, 'If You' is an answer but not a direct answer to Cheater's Prayer because there had to be a female side to this lover's dilemma, and then I ended up doing a dub for Chrome called Cheater's Revenge. And surprise surprise, it is the dubplate which got big and because of the demand, and so we put that out as a song, it is not even recorded properly, but there was such a great demand for it, especially in the Caribbean, with disc jockeys wanting to play it back to back with Chris' song, that it had to go out fast," she said, laughing.

Cecile said that music insiders soon realized that disc jockeys and selectors were actually recording the song off the radio, and dropping it on reggae mixes with the name of the disc jockey embedded in the song. So a decision was made to release the song as a single with Chrome's name edited.

Exclusive Photos: Jah Cure is longing to hold His Daughter for the first time

Jah_cure_baby_Kailani_Belle_Alcock.jpgWhat is reggae superstar Jah Cure 'longing for' these days? To gaze into the eyes of his first child, Kailani Belle Alcock.

His daughter was born last month in California but he was unable to be there for the happy event, but instead had to be content to witness the event via Skype.

"I just can't wait to see her and hold her for the first time," a beaming Jah Cure said.

Kailani Belle Alcock was dragged kicking and screaming into the world after Kamila spent 26 gruelling hours in labour at Alta Bates hospital in Berkeley, California. Her name means 'Beautiful Chief from the Heavens.'

She clocked in at a healthy seven pounds and three ounces and measuring 19 inches

“Her mother chose her name still, a beautiful name for a beautiful princess. Seeing her for the first time was just incredible, the greatest feeling in the world…words can’t explain.”

Jah Cure has not been able to hold his daughter in his arms yet since she was born at a hospital in the USA, but Kamila is doing double duty until they are reunited. She is overwhelmed with joy at the prospect of being a mother.

Damian Marley calls for Jamaica to revamp Reggae music

By Marc Parc Writer

damian_marley_junior_gong_bob_son.jpgWith the apparent declining stronghold that Reggae music has within Jamaican culture, one of its premiere disciples hopes the local industry will help that change for the better.

Internationally acclaimed Reggae superstar, Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley addressed the local and universal state of Reggae music during an interview on CVM's OnStage this past Saturday. Marley, who's spent recent months back home after spending most of 2011 overseas recording and touring, believes that Jamaicans need to once again reap the benefits that Reggae music has provided to fans and musicians worldwide.

With many prominent foreign artistes such as Beyoncé, Justin Beiber and Rihanna using Reggae Riddims in recent hit songs, Marley insists that Jamaicans need to get back to their musical roots and show appreciation for the genre they helped make popular.

"I think Jamaica could pay more homage to their own music themselves. You go out…you don't hear a lot of cultural music. It's a bit imbalanced now," he said.

"Internationally when people hear of Reggae music they still really relate to original, cultural one-drop. They don’t think of what you really hear being played here right now."
With the globalization of Reggae music at an all-time high, Marley thinks this marks a great opportunity for Jamaican artistes to reclaim their genre and create more avenues internationally.

KG impresses at Kitson Town gospel concert

Kereen_Gregory_gospel_artiste_jamaica_female.1.jpgKingston Jamaica - It's not easy for a relatively new artiste to stand out at a concert featuring gospel heavyweight such as Minister Carlene Davis, Goddy Goddy and Kingdom Soldiers, but rising gospel singer Kereen 'KG' Gregory did just that at a concert in Kitson Town recently.

The event was entitled Ash Wednesday Praise and proved to be a rousing praise and worship session in the parish of St Catherine. It was KG's very first time in Kitson Town and she kept her promise to make her performance memorable.

From the moment she hit the stage, KG connected with the audience and steadily built up a momentum with smart selections and verbal interactions with the crowd. Her naturally bubbly personality and her strong love for Christ shone brightly as she ministered in song. KG's 30 minutes seemed all too short and she surely left the crowd wanting more.

Among her selections were Ride Out Your Storm, Highly Favoured and Blessed, God Alone. Lifting Up Praise and Lord Do Mi Again. And the fans showed their appreciation, especially on numbers such as the dancehall gospel flavoured Lord Do Mi Again and Ride Out The Storm.

Vybz Kartel issues letter from behind bars

By Marc Parc Writer

vybz_kartel_letter_writing.jpgEmbattled Dancehall superstar, Adidja Palmer, more popularly known as Vybz Kartel, has publicly addressed his current legal battles for the first time since his arrest last September.

The prominent deejay, who faces murder, drug and obstruction of justice charges stemming from three separate cases, issued a letter from the Horizon Remand Centre in Spanish Town, where he currently resides while awaiting trial. A part of his letter was published in Sunday's edition of the Jamaica Gleaner by University of the West Indies (UWI) literary and cultural professor, Carolyn Cooper who wrote an editorial piece on Kartel's current situation behind bars.

In the piece, Cooper speaks from a mother's point of view as she distinguishes the difference in personality between Vybz Kartel and Adidja Palmer, claiming that Palmer's a complete contrast of the controversial character that his stage persona presents. Additionally, she speaks of various dissections of Kartel's public perception worldwide and in the media.

In the letter, Kartel speaks to those points and then some; accusing law enforcement officials and the media of labeling him guilty before getting the chance to prove his innocence before the courts.

"As you know I am in jail on numerous charges and I'd like to tell you that I am an innocent man who needs your help because I'm being painted as this evil 'D.J. by day, don by night' murderer who is society's number one cause of crime and violence. The police is using the media to slaughter me and as such I don't think I will get a fair trial. They are using the media to form public opinion of me that is so contradictory to the person that I really am. They (police) have tried my case in the public & found me guilty," the letter reads.

RDX Premieres video for single "Always" - Upcoming Album "Soul Poetry"

With this new single comes a not so typical sound you would get from any Dancehall Artist / Group, especially those who rose to stardom came from core dancehall music. RDX however has recently released a song titled "Always" from their upcoming Studio Album "Soul Poetry" which shows a different side of the group.

The video for "Always" debut on Saturday March 2nd on D'WRAP; one of Jamaica's Top Entertainment Programmed hosted by Saudicka Diaram. The video was shot in Warsaw Poland, while the group was on a European tour. RDX wanted to bring a different concept and demonstrate their limitless potential by incorporating more than the typical dancehall atmosphere that they are know for.

Directed by Konrad Werkowicz from Poland, the video and single explores the reasons why people stay in love. The simple and unusual complexities that diversifies and help to transcend a relationship to higher heights which lead to the forging of two spirits into one, therefore love becomes inevitable.

RDX states that "the song was inspired by us realizing that most men such as ourselves are afraid to tell their female companions how they really feel and that most men aren't good at expressing their feelings either".

The 14 track Album is being produced by I-Strong, Blaqk Sheep and Apt.19 and is set for released this summer. A testament of the group's versatility, the dynamic group further stated "Soul Poetry is just poetic music from the soul for the soul. Powerful messages inspired by the varying colours of life."

Michael Jackson Sony back catalog stolen by hackers

By Chenda Ngak

michael_jackson_sony_music_stolen.jpg(CBS News) Two men in the U.K. have allegedly been arrested for illegally downloading 50,000 tracks from Sony's collection of Michael Jackson's back catalog, the Sunday Times reported.

According to the BBC, 26-year-old James Marks and 25-year-old James McCormick are the alleged offenders and were arrested last May. The two have reportedly been released on bail, with a trial scheduled for Jan. 2013. There's no indication that the men are associated with the hacking group Anonymous or LulzSec.

Jackson's entire back catalog was compromised, the latest report says. Sony purchased the rights from the Jackson estate in 2010 for $200 million to complete 10 projects over seven years, Billboard reported. The deal included permission to distribute previously unreleased tracks from "Thriller," "Bad" and "Off the Wall."

While the suspects have been apprehended, the damage may have already been done. If the files reach cyberspace, it will likely cheat the Jackson estate from the opportunity to release the rare tracks on their own terms. There's no information on whether or not any other Sony artists' catalogs were compromised. If so, the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Leonard Cohen and the Foo Fighters may also be victims of the transgression.
