Reggae Superstar Ky-Mani Marley Takes Costa Rica By Storm

Costa Rica: The 2012 installment of "Carnival Puntarenas," the third of the three "major" festivals of the season in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, proved to be another spectacular affair for the more than 40,000 music lovers who converged for the beach side concert in the capital city to see Jamaican reggae star Ky-mani Marley set the day to music.

When the young Marley, son of reggae icon Bob Marley, hit the stage backed the band Konfrontation, excitement and pandemonium broke out in anticipation of the tasty musical treat that was to follow. Marley blazed the stage for well over 120 minutes, delivering a dynamic litany of songs, from his father's repertoire as well as some from his own catalogue. The multi talented singer proved his relevance with favourites like 'Iron Lion Zion,' 'Is This Love,' 'One Love,' 'Get up Stand Up,' 'No Woman No Cry,' 'I Shot the Sheriff' and originals like 'Who We Are,' 'Rasta Love,' 'Ska-Ba-Dar' and 'Dear Dad' - a song that pulls at the heartstrings of anybody who has lost a loved one.

Ky-mani's humble yet high-energy style of delivery demonstrated that it was really about the music and exceeding fans' expectations. He was inundated with requests for autographs and how he managed to sign them while performing is baffling. Pocketbooks and shirts were only a few of the articles patrons threw on stage for signatures.

By nme

Rihanna is reportedly being lined-up to portray Whitney Houston in a new Hollywood biopic of the singer.

According to the Daily Mail, both the 'Talk That Talk' singer and Jennifer Hudson are under consideration to portray Houston in a new biopic.

The report also says that Houston's friend and record label boss Clive Davis is behind the project and wants filming to start as soon as possible.

Other actresses who are said to be in the running for parts in the biopic are Kill Bill star Vivica Fox and American Idol singer Jordin Sparks, as well as Will Smith's 11-year-old daughter Willow, who is reportedly being considered to play Houston as a child.

It is also reported that Houston knew about the plans for a biopic before her death, with a source telling The People over the weekend: "Whitney knew about the project and was excited to see where it would lead. It's hoped the biopic will be as successful as Tina Turner movie What's Love Got To Do With It, which landed two Oscar nominations for Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne who played Tina and Ike Turner.''

Rihanna recently sparked controversy after she teamed up with her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown for a remix of her track 'Birthday Cake', with domestic violence experts warning her about the dangers of reconnecting with Brown.

Are Beenie Man and D'Angel getting back together…again?

By Marc Parc Writer

Just days after reports emerged of a possible reconciliation involving American pop sensations, Chris Brown and Rihanna, it seems as if Dancehall's most enigmatic power couple may be following suit.

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall superstars, Beenie Man and D'Angel have endured public ridicule and scrutiny since the latter artiste filed for divorce last summer following a rollercoaster five-year marriage. Both deejays have fired occasional salvos in each other's direction since the divorce proceedings were publicized, with D'Angel's former boyfriend, Bounty Killer even weighing in on their break-up, leading to the re-ignition of Beenie's long-time rivalry with the "War Lord."

However, reports have now surfaced that Beenie and D'Angel are indeed getting back together again. According to those reports, a source very close to the former couple revealed that the two entertainers still love each other and have been seeing each other privately in order to avoid possible media fallout.

I-Octane 'Shell Down' Guyana National Stadium

i-octane-reggae-artiste-jamaican.jpgFor a moment one had to wonder if they were on Jamaican soil or in Guyana as torches blazed for Digicel Brand Ambassador I-Octane in his first performance in Guyana. The occasion was the celebration of Digicel's fifth anniversary in that island at its National Park on Friday February 17, 2012.

The singjay blasted on stage with his usual burst of energy singing No Love Inna Dem, which had his fans screaming and hands in the air. The pressure intensified when he drew for hits such as My Life, Nuh Ramp Wid Wi and Lose A Friend. It was sweet nostalgia when he went into his catalogue of old hits which included Stab Vampire and Different Page.
But it was when he did his two newest songs Jah Jah and Nah Eat that I-Octane got the surprise of his life. He received the biggest forward for those songs!

"I didn't know it had taken off so much in Guyana, why even a lot of my fans in Jamaica don't know it yet," he said after his performance.
Following I-Octane's hour-long fiery performance on stage it was time for R&B singer Keri Hilson. She could do no wrong the music lovers there and scored with songs such as Return The Favour, Slow Dance and How Does It Feel.

The sibling group Morgan Heritage brought the curtains down on the show in fine style performing hits such as Down By The River, Don't Haffi Dread and Best Friend. Earlier in the evening local acts got the chance to shine as they performed to good response

Nicki Minaj - Nicki Minaj Spent 50K A Month On Accessories

By contactmusic

nicki_minaj_jelwery_accessories.jpgNicki Minaj has revealed she used to splash out a staggering $50,000 a month on designer shoes and bags.

Nicki Minaj used to spend $50,000 on designer accessories every month.
The 'Super Bass' singer admitted she went a bit overboard when she first became famous and blew a large chunk of her earnings on pricey bags and shoes.
She told US Vogue magazine: ''[At one time I was spending $50,000 a month on] Giuseppe, Versace, YSL, and Fendi shoes. And I bought tons of Louis Vuitton bags. When you're a young girl from Queens, you're going to stock up on those bags.''
Along with splashing out on the pricey accessories, Nicki also likes to treat her fans with her earnings.

She explained: ''I went to Negril [restaurant] the other night, and I brought, like, 10 of the fans who were waiting outside with me, and bought them all food!''
Nicki, 29, is known for her eccentric dress sense but admitted she wasn't always so adventurous with her style.

She said: ''I was dressing in Tommy Hilfiger baggy shirts and Boss jeans, but then I met a person who dressed like a tiny lady - pantsuits, heels, lots of makeup. I thought she was larger than life. She once did my makeup - I had never seen myself made up before. I didn't want to wash it off; I felt like I had one day to live this fantasy of being a glamour girl.''

Could Peter Tosh become Jamaica's next National Hero?

By Marc Parc Writer

peter_tosh_reggae_singer_jamaican.jpgThe daughter of an iconic Reggae superstar hopes that her father will become Jamaica's eighth national hero. But it's not the legendary artiste who you might be thinking of.

Niambe Tosh, the daughter of late, great Reggae singer, Peter Tosh thinks that her famous father should be branded a National Hero by the Jamaican Government. This hails as part of the Peter Tosh Estate's campaign to garner full recognition for the Reggae singer's many contributions to Jamaica's music industry, amongst other works.
In an interview with IRIE FM on Tuesday, Niambe Tosh insists that her father deserves such acknowledgement from the local government.

"It's long overdue that our father is recognized as a National Hero. This I just the start of many things I believe to come in Jamaica from the Peter Tosh Estate," she said.
If Tosh were named a National Hero, he would share similar status with the likes of Paul Bogle, Sam Sharpe, Norman Manley, Alexander Bustamante, George William Gordon, Marcus Garvey and Nanny.
In recent years, it's been heavily debated whether Tosh's long-time friend and collaborator, Bob Marley should be a National Hero given his universal contributions to music and Jamaican culture. Though much conversation and a few petitions have accompanied this issue, there has been no serious discussion about awarding Marley such status by the government, to public knowledge.

Tiana shows her street cred with 'Me Nuh Fear Yuh'

By Marc Parc Writer

Download the Tekk On Riddimfrom the links below

Tiana_me_nuh_fear_you_jamaica.jpgDancehall's proverbial princess, Tiana has once again shown a welcoming change of pace with the release of her newest single, Me Nuh Fear Yuh.
Following the worldwide success of her thought-provoking counteraction to Popcaan's Only Man She Want with the single, Only Girl Him Want, Tiana has quickly re-introduced her 'bad gyal' image to the mainstream with Me Nuh Fear Yuh, which features on the newly-released Tekk On Riddim, co-produced by D&H Records and Subkonshus Music.

The single features the somewhat underrated ferocity of Tiana, whose tone throughout Me Nuh Fear Yuh showcases a lack of intimidation within the music industry. In the single, which was unveiled on Tiana's birthday (February 17), she deejays, "booooooout yuh badda dan, diss me, yuh wi see who a di madda one, mi will push yuh back inna yuh madda weh yuh come from, heh heh, a weh yuh come from?”
The short but sweet single reinforces Tiana's strangle hold within the Dancehall industry as she aims to build on her growing reputation as one of the genre’s new-age first ladies.

Me Nuh Fear Yuh hails as one of many songs on the loaded, Tekk On Riddim, a production reminiscent of the popular G Shock Riddim, also the brain child of the D&H/Subkonshus brands. The Tekk On Riddim features singles from several internationally-acclaimed artistes such as Beenie Man with Gal I Know Yuh, Tarrus Riley with Centre of Attraction, Leftside with Tic Toc, Darrio with Old School Style, Delus with Set Suh and Konshens with Hot Patty and Badman Settingz. A European promo of the Tekk On Riddim was also unveiled; featuring a slew of underground and emerging young artistes on that continent such as Young Cashino and Kalibwoy, amongst others.

Meanwhile, Me Nuh Fear Yuh follows up a soothing Reggae single from Tiana on the Raining Bass Riddim, entitled U Alone; showcasing a sound rarely heard from an artiste with such versatility.
For Tiana, these singles reflect the essence of an artiste who knows no boundaries.

Etana Headlines Strength of A Woman

Etana_reggae_singer_bob_marley_eart_strong.jpgThis past weekend was an exciting one for fans of Etana on the beautiful isle of St. Croix. She headlined the event Strength of a Woman that was hosted by diva, Nicky Z. The show was all about women and they turned out in their numbers to support.

Etana performed twenty of her tracks to the thick, highly energized audience. Overwhelming responses came from the Virgin Islander's for their favorites: People Talk, Dance, Blessing, I Am Not Afraid and Free. Etana introduced her new tracks, Wifey and I Am Strong which were both well received; other acts that performed included Mother Nile and Alaine.

This was Etana's first time performing as a solo act in this territory. She recalls her first trip in 2005. "Funny enough I clearly remembered the hotel we stayed in and that we had to take a small boat there; back then, I was a back ground vocalist for Richie Spice. I say, its funny as I don't usually remember all the details about some of the locations I've toured. You see so many places in such a short time. I truly love the Virgin Islands and was thrilled to be back".

The Singles Bar: Sean Paul ft. Kelly Rowland, "How Deep Is Your Love"

Posted by Katherine St Asaph

There was a time, all the way back in the 2000s, when Sean Paul’s popped-out dancehall was as inescapable on the radio as dance is now. Since then, time has done what time tends to do, meaning that it slipped even our radar that he’s got an album, Tomahawk Technique, out next year. (There’ve been a few singles from it before this. In the States, they’ve done almost nothing, although they both went to No. 1 for some reason in Switzerland. If anyone knows details our American Googling can’t quite reveal, do let us know.)

The words “ft. Kelly Rowland,” however, tend to pique interest outside odd(?) chart blips, and they definitely pique ours, so let’s get right to it. This is not a cover of the Bee Gees. Nor is it a cover of The Rapture. Instead, the red herring of a title belongs to a Stargate production that once involved Ester Dean, which means Paul's team had radio in the exact mathematical center of its crosshairs even before adding Kelly, or probably even before the track took shape.

“[How Deep Is Your Love] is similar to ‘Got 2 Luv U’ with Alexis Jordan,” Sean Paul told Rap-Up, which is astute if not immediately promising. The tracks share the same producer and sound essentially the same. That said, “How Deep Is Your Love” is the stronger by far; the melody moves like a melody and not like a nail-gun down the scale, and Rowland’s alto has more gravitas almost by definition than newcomer Jordan’s presence.

Stephen Marley plays down Grammy win, hopes state of music industry will improve

stephen_marley_grammy_not_pleased.jpgInternationally acclaimed Reggae superstar, Stephen Marley has a lot or reasons why he should feel happy with his continued success. However, forgive the prominent singer if he's not totally enthused about his most recent achievement.
Last Sunday, Marley won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album during the 54th Annual Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles, California for his album, Revelation Pt. 1: The Root of Life. This marked the artiste's third career Grammy as a solo artiste and 10th overall, dating back to his days as a member and producer of his older brother's band, Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers.

Despite this unprecedented accomplishment for a Jamaican artiste, Marley claims that he hasn't make a big deal about his latest Grammy achievement; implying during an in-depth interview with TVJ's Entertainment Report that it's just another footnote in his growing legacy.

"Is not someting dat I tink about. Mi no tink bout the Grammys or any awards for that matter… It's not that important to me," he said.

Popcaan Drops Shocking Vibes - Replaced With New Booking Agent

By M. Jodee Writer

Popcaan_only_man_she_want.jpgEmerging Dancehall superstar, Popcaan has switched booking agents just four months after enlisting the services of a prominent label to control his appointments.

The breakthrough Portmore Empire deejay initially joined forces with Patrick Roberts, owner of the Shocking Vibes record label last October; confirming that the prominent imprint was Popcaan's official booking agency. The arrangement took place after initial talks involving Popcaan and Roberts' son, Jamie Roberts, more popularly known as Young Vibez. There were even reports that Shocking Vibes were looking to manage Popcaan outright going forward

However, Popcaan now claims that a different entity will take bookings on his behalf going forward. In a radio interview on Wednesday night, the Ravin' singer intimated that internationally-acclaimed communications company, Creative Source Inc. will take full charge of his bookings.

"At the moment still, I got Creative Source responsible for the bookings. (I'm) well taken care of," Popcaan said before shouting out Creative Source TV producer, Carlene Samuels.

Funeral for Whitney Houston to stream live

By Marc Parc Writer

Fans all over the world will have the chance to bid adieu late R&B icon, Whitney Houston as her upcoming funeral will be streamed live.

The Grammy-winning R&B singer, known for a slew of hits such as I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Heartbreak Hotel and I Will Always Love You was found dead in a bathtub inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California. She was just 48 years old; leaving behind her only child, Bobbi Kristina Houston, 19 who was later treated at a California hospital following a panic attack after learning of the news.

Houston's funeral is scheduled to take place this coming Saturday in her birthplace of Newark, New Jersey at the New Hope Baptist Church, where the legendary artiste sang as a child. The funeral has been branded an invitation only event by the singer’s family; asking the media and public at large to let them grieve privately.

However, following initial negative reactions from her legions of fans across the world, Houston's funeral will be streamed live, via the Associated Press' official website, while broadcasters will be allowed to show the funeral, via satellite.

Houston's mother and fellow singer, Cissy Houston, cousin and fellow R&B icon, Dionne Warwick as well as the 'Queen of Soul,' Aretha Franklin will form a special, all-star choir in honour of the late singer. Meanwhile, Houston's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, who's also the father of Bobbi Kristina Houston reportedly was invited despite several media reports that there’s been a growing tension between Whitney Houston's family and the former New Edition singer.

Kereen Gregory happy to share stage with Carlene Davis

Kereen_Gregory_gospel_artiste_jamaica_female.jpgRising gospel act, Kereen Gregory, aka KG, is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to perform alongside one of her favourite female singers, Carlene Davis.

The two are among a set of gospel acts scheduled to thrill fans at a concert entitled Ash Wednesday Praise, scheduled for February 22 in Kitson Town, St Catherine.

KG, who declares that Carlene Davis has been an inspiration to her, also noted that she welcomed the opportunity to get up close with fans in that section of Jamaica.

"Minister Carlene Davis' story is such a wonderful one; how she moved from secular to gospel with such grace and I am particularly impressed with how Sister Carlene handled the testing of her faith in God when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has always been one of my heroes and it is a joy to share stage with such a powerful woman of God," KG said emotionally.

She added that it would be her first time performing in Kitson Town and, as such, "it will definitely be a night to remember".

Dancehall Giants Bounty Killer and Elephant Man's vehicles now up for auction

By M. Jodee Writer

Some very prized properties, formerly owned by two prominent Dancehall deejays now face the prospect of being auctioned off.

Highly-valued automobiles, belonging to Alliance leader, Bounty Killer and long-time protégé, Elephant Man are on public auction by the Tax Administration of Jamaica (TAJ). Bounty Killer's 1998 White Land Cruiser VX and his white 2006 Range Rover Sports HSE as well as Elephant Man's red 2002 Mercedes Benz are being advertised for the second time after previously being put up last March.

All three vehicles were seized by the Inland Revenue Department after both artistes reportedly owed millions in unpaid taxes. Elephant Man had his Kingston home raided last July when law enforcement officials seized his Mercedes Benz. Two months later, Bounty Killer's two luxury vehicles were captured by tax officials just month after his United States visa had been stripped from him. Law enforcement officials claimed he owed millions of dollars in unpaid taxes as well.

According to TAJ's Latoure Duhaney, both artistes must pay all taxes owed by this Friday should they wish to recover their assets. Else, the auction on their vehicles will commence.

Nicki Minaj Performs BlackOut Movement Single at Grammy Awards

Critically Acclaimed Producer BlackOut Behind Minaj's Smash Hit, "Roman Holiday"

BlackOut_nicky_minaj_Roman_holiday.jpgFamed producer Winston "BlackOut" Thomas is behind Nicki Minaj's new smash single, "Roman Holiday," which she premiered in a jaw-dropping performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards on February 12, the world's biggest stage for music.

"After producing 'Blow Your Mind' for her debut album Pink Friday, which received the Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album, I was pleasantly surprised they were using my new track for Nicki to premiere at the Grammy's," states an elated BlackOut. "They informed me a month ago about the Grammy performance, so I hosted a Grammy-viewing party in Miami for a few close friends but they didn't know...everyone went wild when she performed 'Roman Holiday.' I am honored to be a producer on both of her albums and to play a part in her creative process and success."

Minaj's performance has raised brows worldwide and furor within the Catholic community, as she pulled from religious symbolisms to exploit the exorcism of her favorite alter ego Roman Zolanski, on whom the song is based. Her Hype Williams' directed Grammy performance saw her using a pope as a prop, wearing a nun's habit-like outfit, and culminated in spectacular fashion as she levitated above the stage, and over a stunned audience.

No ‘Follow Di Arrow’ in 2012, future of show uncertain

By Marc Parc Writer

follow_di_arrow_concert_ennis.jpgFollow Di Arrow, the popular Dancehall stage show which normally takes place each February in St. Mary, will not take place this year.
Annually held at James Bond Beach on Jamaica's North Coast, Follow Di Arrow has featured several of Dancehall biggest names. However, last year's event ended in an unsavory fashion after Bounty Killer made comments that were seemingly aimed at his former protégé turned rival, Vybz Kartel. Patrons then hurled bottles at the self-professed 'Grung Gaad' in protest; causing Bounty Killer to run for cover. When Kartel appeared on stage minutes later, he was met with glass bottles before even addressing the crowd, prompting him to run for safety. Gunshots were also fired in protest, causing the crowd to go into a frenzy.

Considering all those factors, Follow Di Arrow promoter, Dexton Ennis, intimated during a radio interview on Tuesday that the show would not take place this year.

"I was very indecisive about keeping the show based on what happened last year. However, a number of people keep cussing and calling and when I decided she 'Alright, I'll give it a thought,' it was too late," he said.

The future of Follow Di Arrow hangs in the balance according to Ennis. However, he'll look to reflect on past events and remains hopeful that the show will return in 2013.
"I'm just doing some reflection. I want the good people that have supported Follow Di Arrow over the years that I have always done my best as a promoter; always delivered and to see what happened last year put a damp on the promotion," Ennis said.
"Hopefully, we might see Follow Di Arrow again next year."
The show has taken place ever since 2000 in Oracabessa, St. Mary.

Nicki Minaj Angers Catholic League With Grammys "Exorcism"

Nicki Minaj is known for her over-the-top stage persona, but her performance at Sunday's 54th Annual Grammy Awards took things to a whole new level.
Wearing an Oscar de la Renta dress, the 29-year-old shocked viewers when she performed her new song "Roman Holiday" for the very first time. Channeling her alter ego Roman Zolanski, Minaj's performance pushed religious boundaries.

PHOTOS: What the stars wore at the 2012 Grammys

"I had this vision for Roman for him to be sort of exorcised," she explained on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show Monday. "People around him tell him he's not good enough because he's not normal and he's not blending in with the Average Joe."
The Grammy nominee's performance included a Catholic confessional, demonic possession, dancing monks and a levitation scene.

"The people around him are afraid because they've never seen anything like him. He wanted to show that not only is he amazing . . . but he's never going to change. He's never going to be exorcised," Minaj said. "Even when they throw the holy water on him, he still rises above."

U.S. Government counters Buju appeal, seeks reinstatement of gun charge

By Marc Parc Writer

buju_banton_appeal_drug_case.jpgThe United States government has issued its first public response to the recent appeal made on behalf of international Reggae superstar, Mark Myrie, more popularly known as Buju Banton.

Buju Banton's legal team, led by Florida-based attorney, David Oscar Markus filed an appeal, via a Georgia appellate court this past December; hoping that law enforcement officials would overturn his 10 year sentence on federal drug charges. Buju's legal team cited the untrustworthy nature of renowned government informant, Alexander Johnson and a possible violation of the Speedy Trial Act, amongst other factors as grounds for the case’s dismissal.

Now, the U.S. government has retorted to those claims; intimating that they have ample evidence supporting their case that Buju Banton organized a drug trafficking operation in December 2009. Filing a response to the aforementioned appeal on Friday, federal prosecutors insist that the Reggae superstar recorded conversations with Johnson, as well as video tapes showing Banton tasting cocaine in a Sarasota, FL warehouse prove that Buju "eagerly brokered" a drug deal involving a friend and several undercover agents.

Marley also beat out Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Shaggy for his tenth studio album, Summer in Kingston. Other nominees in the Best Reggae Album category were veteran artistes, Israel Vibration for Reggae Knights and Monty Alexander for Harlem- Kingston Express: Live.

This Grammy victory marks a record third for Stephen Marley as a solo artiste; adding to five awards he previously won as a member and producer of his brother, Ziggy's band, Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers. The Marley family, in total, has won an impressive 14 awards since the Best Reggae Album category was introduced in 1985, four years after their legendary father, Bob Marley died. Ziggy Marley has won four awards while Damian Marley won for his albums, Half Way Tree (2003) and Welcome to Jamrock (2006).

Innocent: New details emerge in Buju case

"Buju Banton is innocent" - New details emerge regarding events leading to Reggae star's sentence

buju-banton-free-reggae-artistes.jpgMany Jamaicans steadfastly believe that currently incarcerated Reggae superstar, Mark Myrie aka Buju Banton was entrapped by the United States government; leading to his subsequent conviction on drug-related charges last year. However, one American journalist has gone full-length to try and attach merit the aforementioned sentiment.

Chris Sweeney, a writer for the Miami New Times unveiled an in-depth, six-page piece on Tuesday, documenting the various events preceding Buju Banton's arrest in December 2009 as well as his conviction last February on three drug charges. The piece speaks of how Buju met Alex Johnson, the lead informant in the Reggae superstar's case who later accepted a plea deal in the case to avoid a lengthy jail sentence.

In the piece titled, Buju Banton Is Innocent, Sweeney details a flight that the Untold Stories singer took on July 26, 2009 from Madrid, Spain to Miami, Florida. On that flight, Buju met Johnson, who introduced himself as "Junior," while claiming to know Lloyd Evans, a manager who'd long been an idol of the Reggae singjay. Buju, who was allegedly drunk at the time, was called over by Johnson prior to plane's landing in Miami, where he showed Banton money that he made from illegal ventures. Buju responded by supposedly bragging about a drug ring he was involved in that had roots in South America and Europe.

Before They Were Stars with Damian Marley

By Marc Parc Writer

Following in the footsteps of a celebrity relative is hard enough. But when your father hails as the greatest musician to grace Jamaica's shores i.e. Bob Marley that job becomes tougher.

However, Damian Marley has not only managed to follow those footsteps successfully, he's established his own identity; moving from under his father's shadow to become one of Reggae music's most celebrated acts to today's generation. Like Tuff Gong before him, Junior Gong has managed to encapsulate fan bases worldwide with messages of peace, prosperity and social consciousness. But for Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, his journey to super stardom took much different turns.

Marley was born on July 21, 1978 to Bob Marley and 1976 Miss World winner, Cindy Breakspeare. Like his many siblings, Marley looked up to his iconic father but never got the chance to truly enjoy his effervescent presence as Bob Marley succumbed to bone cancer when Damian was only two years old. Despite only knowing his father for such a short time, Marley decided to follow in his father’s footsteps as he aimed to start a new family legacy.

During his teenage years, Damian Marley founded a group dubbed The Shephards. The group, including the daughter of Big Ship patriarch, Freddie McGregor (Yashema McGregor) and the son of Third World drummer, Cat Coore (Shiah Coore) immediately garnered buzz across the Reggae industry. This resulted in Marley, who was 13 at the time, leading The Shephards on the Reggae Sunsplash stage in 1992 as the show's opening act. Despite initial success, the group quickly disintegrated, leading Marley to pursue a solo career.

In 1996, Marley sought to surprise the music industry as he and his brother, Stephen Marley co-wrote singles for Damian's debut album, Mr. Marley. Instead of the soothing Reggae vocals fans were accustomed to from Bob and Ziggy Marley respectively, Damian graced the mainstream with a hard hitting, Dancehall style. Though he announced himself to the world as "Junior Gong," some listeners were thrown off by this change of pace; resulting in the lack of success the album ultimately achieved despite reputable efforts such as 10,000 Chariots and Old War Chant.

Delus Scores With Single "What Tomorrow May Bring!"

delus-what-tomorrow-may-bring.jpgNEW YORK, NY: For far too long one could not say the name Delus without following up with "Konshen's older brother?" However, this rising star is working feverishly to move out of his younger sibling's shadow by carving a niche for himself and some would say he has succeeded.

With his summer 2010 anthem "Look Another Gal," Delus made fans and industry executives take a second look at his body of work. Media became enamored by not only his talent, but his humility and it seems that every day he was either doing a television, radio or print interview. His continuous drive and hard work landed him an EME Award nomination for Most Improved Artist and a MIA Awards nomination for Most Determined Artist in 2011. When the single was not being played daily on the radio, it was being played at popular weekly parties, in taxis and by street vendors. The success of the single fueled his determination to follow-up with other credible singles. And that he did.

Delus released a slew of singles, such as "Get Away," "Life," "Silent River," and "Gal My Ting Deh." However it is his current single "What Tomorrow May Bring" that has again struck a chord with the masses. With this offering, Delus removes the veil and exposed exactly what's on his mind. And it's a lot! The lyrical honesty and positive message has everyone cheering and singing along. While Delus might not be sure about "What Tomorrow May Bring," here is what's certain: (1) tomorrow he will work just as hard - or even harder - than yesterday, (2) his track record proves that he will also continue to make quality music that everyone can identify with, and (3) his servility and love of the craft will continue to win audiences worldwide.

"What Tomorrow May Bring" produced by Dameon Gayle of Warrior Music is available on iTunes and other digital outlets.

Gospel Act, Kereen Gregory Gets Radikal With New Single

Kereen-Gregory-female-artiste.jpgWhen singer Kereen Gregory, aka KG, entered the JCDC Gospel Song Contest in 2008, she was defined as a great singer with lots of potential. Her lyrical path was the safe religious homilies that could light a spark and leave Christians with that good feeling.

However, four years later, Kereen Gregory is not merely setting off sparks, she is creating fires and firestorms of criticism as she explores her musical horizons in her quest to win souls for Christ. Her lyrical content has moved from safe to edgy -- some would perhaps say 'too edgy -- and KG has stepped out as a dancehall deejay, while keeping true to her God-centric focus.

In 2011, Kereen teamed up with controversial and successful gospel artiste, Prodigal Son and embraced the challenge to boldly step out into the world as a testimony to her faith. KG entered Prodigal's Radikal Yawd outfit and was re-baptised. She emerged from the studio sounding like a seasoned deejay, throwing down lyrics that were sure to make both Christendom and the world stop and listen.
One of her singles on the Radikal Yawd imprint is called Who Me You Mad and is chockful of sexual overtones, while driving home the point that God is her only man and is totally in charge of her existence. "You a di boss, You a di don", Kereen declares in one verse of the song, prior to going into the ear-popping chorus: Who me, you mad, fi one night of fun fi go cheat with the devil and give me God bun?

Popcaan Lands Rotation on New York's HOT 97

popcaan-music-twitter-outaroad-facebook.jpgOne of dancehall's newest megastars, Popcaan, is continuing to make his mark on the international scene. After recently appearing on the enviable Complex magazine's website, the artiste's hit, Only Man She Want, was this week added to New York's HOT 97 playlist.

The artiste whose correct name is Andrae Sutherland, and who hails from St. Thomas before relocating to Portmore, St. Catherine first came to the musical fore with the international hit single, Clarks, alongside mentor, Vybz Kartel. Since then he has created a string of hits including, Ravin' and more recently, Party Shot.

One of the main forces behind Only Man She Want's inclusion in HOT 97's playlist, Johnny Wonder, says he is extremely proud of the young deejay's snowballing success. Wonder, executive vice-president of the digital distribution company, 21st-Hapilos, has also had a hand in other reggae and dancehall tracks being added to the station's playlist under the 21st-Hapilos' watch. They include, Rum and Redbull by Beenie Man and Future Fambo, Khago's Nah Sell Out and more.

"First of all I have to thank Bobby Konders and Mister Cee of HOT 97 for their support; they are always behind us 100 percent and we are thankful. I am also happy with Popcaan's growing success, both locally and in the international market. The fact is that, the more artistes we can get showcased internationally, the better it will be for our music and the easier it will become for international record labels to invest in our music because they see that there is a market for it," says Wonder.

Serani Blazes Musical Trail In Europe

Dancehall artiste, Serani, has been blazing a trail on his European tour and has no intention of slowing down.

The singer, who is known for his popular hits including, Doh, No Games, She Loves Me, says the reception he has garnered thus far has been phenomenal.

"All the fans have been very receptive to me generally. They love to dance to Skip To Ma Luu a lot, and No Games which was also produced by me is among the favourites here. Another song they enjoy is Romance which was produced by Chimney Records. They scream and sing that song a lot," says Serani.

He continued, "That came as a big surprise because I'm performing to crossover crowds - these are not dancehall crowds and the song was never on MTV and never got much play on Hip Hop stations in the States, so the reception for the song was great and surprising."

Most of the singer's exciting performances will be in Germany, and thus far some of his favourite stops have been Bremen, Cologne and Bremerhafen. "These performances had the hypest and loudest crowds. Germany is huge and they love reggae music, so that's a bonus. It's a great country to push reggae music in."

Not to be outdone, Serani has also been maintaining a steady presence in the Caribbean market with his recent releases, including Naah Beg Friend on Fire Links' Off the Bench Riddim, a new single on ZJ Sparks' Kush Riddim and Make Me Stronger on Stephen "Di Genius" McGregor's latest riddim.

Elephant Man strongly denies rape allegations

By Marc Parc Writer

Dancehall superstar, Oneil Bryan, more popularly known as Elephant Man steadfastly denies allegations of rape and grievous sexual assault that were brought against him earlier this week.

elephant_man_law_suit_freed.jpgThe self-professed "Energy God" was slapped with said charges on Monday after a 31 year old woman filed a police report last week regarding an alleged assault at Elephant Man's Hillcrest Avenue home in Kingston. Detectives from the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) took Elephant Man into custody and, following questioning, slapped the Pon Di River deejay with rape and assault charges.

Elephant Man was granted JA$400,000 bail when he appeared at the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court in Kingston and now faces a May 21 preliminary hearing where he'll answer the two charges. Following his court appearance, Elephant Man vehemently denied the allegations; insisting he'd never do anything to violate his fans' trust.

"Wi a mek the fans them know seh nothing like that and Elephant would never let down the fans them like that, you understand. Si wi out and wi just a seh give thanks and praise to the almighty god and wi a mek the fans them know seh Energy God nah let unnu down. Yuh mad man?" an apparently upbeat Elephant Man said in front of a press gathering outside the courthouse.

Brit Jam Reloaded Riddim Review - Kartel, Beenie Man, Sizzla, Munga, Konhens & More

vybz_kartel_bail_cops_case_court.jpgDancehall critics are raving about the Brit Jam Reloaded riddim which boasts heavyweight acts such as Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Konshens, Munga, and Sizzla, as well as second tier acts since its release on FM radio last week.

The bouncy drum-heavy riddim, produced on the Good Good Productions label, with 'Zum' as the executive producer, has been generating a lot of interest because of a Vybz Kartel single called 'Dem Licky Licky' which appears to mention the incarceration, legal woes and personal problems that the World Boss has found himself mired in. The single, a true-to-life breakdown of betrayals by former friends, is quite instructive given the events in his life over the last five months, and shows Kartel's state of mind as he continues to make comparisons between his life and that of Jesus Christ.

The verse goes:

Mi roll wid the family, that's the way it goes
Nuff bwoy who ah run in bout dem a yu friend, dem a foes
Wolf inna sheep clothes, bredrin like those,
yu find pon handcart wid all the tag de pon dem toes
To the police, dem mek yu business expose
Judas sell out Jesus and look how dem close

Arguably the best song on the riddim however is Munga's 'Season to Season' where the deejay's witty wordplay and offbeat metaphors show why he is rated as one of the best artistes of his generation. The single is a straight-up party song and it shows Munga's re-emergence as a top rhyme-slinger with brilliant lines like 'fresh like Dunn's River Falls weh a run weh’ and he pulls off a great song with only a minimal amount of auto-tune.

Sanjay and Beenie Man Want 'A Piece A Di Wine'

Piece A Di Wine is another in a slew of creditable collaborations by Sanjay…

Noted lyricist Sanjay and ace deejay Beenie Man have teamed up to drop a hot track called Piece A Di Wine. The dancehall song will be released at the Youth View Awards after party this Saturday February four and will also feature on iTunes shortly after.

Piece A Di Wine is another notch in Sanjay’s cap as he continues to release infectious songs that have become anthems on the ground. Sanjay hit it big in 2007 with Man Of My Word and has since consistently followed up with both dancehall and reggae numbers which have made him a perennial staple on the local music scene.

Piece A Di Wine is another in a slew of creditable collaborations by Sanjay who in 2002 debuted with Strictly Physical featuring Tami Chynn, a song which preceded collabs with Vybz Kartel, Cecile and Aidonia to name a few. Based on his lyrical talents and niche appeal Sanjay is able to pick from the crème de la crème of Jamaican artistes with which to collaborate. Now he adds this track with Beenie Man to his repertoire.
