Wendell Stewart, 23 - Unemployed:
Yow mi love di two artistes dem but anyone who you ask this question will never say it’s right for a next man to disrespect a another man’s mother. Vybz Kartel is taking it too far, he’s acting as if he’s a child going to school and the quickest way to diss a man is by telling him fi guh suck him mother.
Samantha Hutchinson, 21 - College Student:
I watched the interview with Mavado on ER and you can tell that he’s hurt about the situation and I am only glad that he did not disrespect Kartel’s mother back in any of his songs. I used to love Kartel a lot but since he started saying that he don’t need to know God and how him f**ked Mavado’s mother pon di gaza that is out right disrespectful and ungodly. Another thing, I was surprised to hear Mavado mentioned that Vybz Kartel doesn’t have any morals, but Mavado is no different from Vybz Kartel because he was the one who sang about cutting Beenie Man’s son’s throat.
Raven Cordell, 27 - Store Clerk:
If my best friend tell me that a him a f**k my mother, I would never deal with him again maybe we would a even fight same place pon spot much less someone who is not my friend to tell me. Mi not going to support that and the selectors dem who played the song is also contributing to the disrespect.
O’Neil Hibbert, 29 - Street Vendor:
I am not going to say it’s right for Vybz Kartel to sing about Mavado’s mother in a disrespectful manner but maybe at the end of the day it’s just a song with no meaning. What if every time when someone tells me about my mother mi tek it personal and fight - then I would be dead a long time ago, we just need to understand that words are wind even though it can hurt your feelings.
Rosa Stanford, 31 - Nurse:
I am not a fan of dancehall music but that doesn’t means I don’t know what is taking place because it’s always playing by someone on the road side, in the buses or robot taxis. There is no way you can escape the slackness of dancehall music. I first heard that song while I was on my way to work on a bus from Portmore. I didn’t care about what Vybz Kartel was singing about - what was more disturbing to me is that the bus driver don’t have no respect for his passengers, even kids were on the bus and these nasty things were being said in the song.
